Nut on crank shaft pully...

Postby Quint » Wed Dec 21, 2005 9:03 pm

Went to do my cambelt today (was doing a full service to my car before i moved down south, have no tools downt there yet) Anyway, couldn't get the bolt off that was on the crankshaft pully, used a 800nm rattle gun, didn't even touch it, also bent a 20mm Iron bar useing it as a lever and i was makeing the clutch slip (had it in 5th with handbrake and foot brake hard on) No idea how to get it off, does anyone have any hints or ideas? The manual says, 'put on SST and turn' Not much help :/

Oh its a GA-70 with the 1G.

If all else fails, is it a non-interferance head? (does the piston hit the valves?)

One crude way that does work sometimes is, jam a bar in there (with socket on nut) and turn the key!!

Obviously make sure the bar is jammed so as to not turn anymore with engine turning clockwise.

Oh, and obviously this ISNT a recomended way of doing it as severe damage, harm and death can occur, so if you do try this, be wared, you have been told!

take a spark plug out and rotate the motor by hand till the spark plug is as far down as it will go, then stuff some soft nylon rope in there (not forgetting to keep hold of an end), then rotate the motor to tdc and then try and get the bolt off with a power bar.

works everytime and aint dodgy

Lol, my mechanic mate was taught that method at his course...

And yeah, worked on my 20v.

Dont jam the bar, leave a couple of cm of gap. Its supposed to work the same way as a rattle gun, sudden impact. Jamming it tight wont be nearly as effective

if nothing else works, drill it out (start with 5mm then work your way to 10mm drill bit in 1mm steps)...

I've always just jammed a big screwdriver in the flywheel ring gear - then the crank and pulley cannot move at all and it's easy to get off.

The official SST wont be as rangi as that, purpose is to be able to hold the pully whilst removing/reinstalling the bolt.

Or you could call ones of those truck tyre repair trucks. I did that and it cost me $20 for the guy to come to my home. Took him about 30 secs to get a crank bolt undone.

Yeah mate, its how it goes in the trade! im halfway thru training to be an auto sparky and for stubborn crank pulley bolts we use a strongarm and near enought to the floor and quick flick of the ign!

NOTE: dont put you head, or your boofhead friends head in engine bay (to see whjat happens) thats just asking for a socket in the face!
