Best roads with twisty bits in NZ

Brynderwyn Hills in Northland, heaps of windy bits on that hill and when heading south its double lanes all the way up so you can easily take the racing line. Its a 100km zone but I usually average around 130 going up the north side

Mungamoka's in far north has some awesome corners as does Paekok Hill down here and you cant go past Ohariu Valley

LOL, try a EP82 starlet v Holden SS or WRX, beat both of them cos they couldnt take the corners at the speeds I could And I beat the SS with a car full of furniture and plants too so she was bloody heavy, and the turbo was still the standard one too

im sorry, but i find that abit hard to believe.
I have raced an ep82 through some very twisty roads in my ma61 when it hard the 2.8 in it.

the startlet wasnt getting away thats for sure. made a little bit of distance through the corners, but the ma61 had the torque and would very quickly catch up on anything that even looked half straight.

i would imagine the ss would crap all over the startlet when driven properly

HELL YES! Im glad im not the only one who loves these hills North side is best, but south side is good as long as you arent stuck behind someone slow!

Haha yep learnt to drive on the road from the Bay of Islands to Auckland and that hill has always been my favourite. Im pretty sure I get it from my father Took the old mans ceffie for a blat up there and even tho its an auto that RB20DET still packs a nice punch, got a bit sideways half way up on the big sweeper but hey its all good fun.

I hope they sought out the south side, use to love it went there was a passing lane cos u could get some nice speeds outta the corners, damn side of the hill breaking away and taking the precious passing lane with it. Worst thing is following trucks up there 20km just aint the same as 120

Oh yeah another windy bit of road up north is the road out to Teal Bay way, damn thats got some nice corners on it once you get to know the road......

Thats one awesome road. That first 35? corner is a killer if you go in too hot in 3rd gear *crossed up, using both lanes to recover*

Twilight is almost the best road I have ever had the pleasure of running over. The only one that would take it's place from number one is Mountain Road up the side of Mt Taranaki. Taranaki Car Club used to run a hill climb up that road. If you have have no talent it's best you don't ever try it as it has taken out some very experienced drivers. Oh the joy that road gives

theres a great little road out the back of pukekohe called cameron town road, god its a nightmare, its two lanned but you can only fit one car on it at a time, twisty as hell, and has a massive inverted drop - its my touge run

Dude is that the one where you go Upper Queen Street and right around the back of Puke Hill and kinda heads out to Waiuku but a bit more west?I think I know the one.

My other favourites:

-Papakura out to Clevedon then through Maraetai out to Whitford
-Mercer Country Stop,over the Mercer Bridge upto Pukekawa.(Mercer Ferry Road-->Mile Bush Road-->SH22
-Churchill Road then onto gravel,ends up on huge tarmac straight that comes out at Rangiriri
-SH22 out to Glen Murray
-The Corkscrew (Pukekawa to Tuakau)
-Taupiri to Hamilton via Gordonton

Thats exactly what I need.

Unfortunatly my bank account doesn't agree But will try find some money, definatly no garentees though. Would be cool as, as im too scared of crashing on the road

Yep track days are definately a good way to learn how to take corners fast and also learn the limitations of your vehicle.

Pukekohe also have track days throughout the year which might be a bit cheaper for you as you wouldnt have to fork out for accommodation.

found a grouse road this morning, the road leading to Denniston near Westport.9km of hairpins and not-so tight corners, coupled with 20m visibility would make for an awesome hillclimb!!

True, tho I neva had a problem with insurance when I needed it (touch wood). Dont have insurance on the starlet now tho as its no longer a road car

yer thats the one, its pretty dangerous when cars come the other way though, is that road near mercer used in the targa?? I remember going out there to watch a stage once but I cant remember the name of the road.

The road from Cass for about 30kms into arthurs pass at midnight. I have done it in 18 minutes and wasnt speeding and I know someone who has done it in 16 minutes but they were speeding. It usually takes half an hour.

Kawakawa to Paihia, its 100km all the way but heaps of people take it at around 70km. Its about a 1/2 hour trip but in good conditions with no traffic to hold you up you can do it at 100km (if your game) and get there in around 15 minutes.

Course there is always the road to Matauri Bay with its 75 degree corner (i s*#t you not) recommended speed for this corner..... 25km, can be done at about 50 if you have a rwd or a great fwd setup and balls of steel. Muck up that corner and you have an express ticket to the beach below

There are certainly some good ones around kawakawa, and even the 10 min or so leading up to okiato is good fun too.

There are also some fantastic ones out through riverhead forest, especially a gravel one that keeps getting less and less gravel on it until it ends up in some farmers paddock and you're like "where'd the road go?" - the fun i had in my gts4 on that road...

Another small stretch of great fun is in between huia and little huia - tight cambered corners that you can really throw the car around. And then if you're out that way you may as well go on to whatipu as the road out there is always a blast as well.

Seems like we've got a pretty sweet selection. I originally posted this topic because I drive frequently from auckland to invercargill, and when time permits side trips, you'll know where to find me.

I think we're all propbably a little bit guilty of using the road like a playground when we can't get track time. That's what happened to me when I came up to auckland. Living downtown and walking to work gives me the itch to drive something fierce. When I'm back at home, teretonga is my friend.

That twilight road is fantastic. When I first moved up and stayed at my sisters place in Manurewa I did a little bit of exploring and came home raving about a tight twisty road where I tailed an m3 in the fxgt. The guy in the m3 was driving like a nana until we saw the straighter bits but was still nice enough to stop and have a chat when we doubled back and stopped at the dairy. He'd just bought it and didn't want to waste it on the first day.

I have to say though, as much as we complain about the quality of some of our roads and moan about them being crap compared to overseas, at least they're a hell of a lot more interesting that overseas highways. Sure some of them are straight as hell, and if you were privileged enough to be in some of the few places with no speed limits then even those long boring straights can be fun enough.

I'm glad that a large portion of our highways are coastal and mountainous, makes the drive more interesting.

As a travel agent, people ask us all the time how long it takes to drive from one place to another. My favourite line is always - well that depends on how much you enjoy driving. Sometimes we get americans asking us how long it would take to drive between auckland and cairns, never auckland and anywhere else in australia, just cairns. I bet that would have some wicked twisty bits in it.

Or how about the road down the coromandel from thames all the way to tauraunga, costal way. Once chased some dickhead in a 1500 familia in the campervan to give him a good telling off and reasons why you shouldn't pass on double yellow lines grrr. Had to give up in the end not because he was getting away from me but because the missus threatened me with breaking a plate over my head if i broke any of the crockery in the cupboards. Most interesting bit about it was the look on the guys face of phew some twisty bits that camper won't be able to keep up through here and then the look of fear as he didn't get away at all
