GTZ + High Km's = Worth it?

Postby DB4G63 » Thu Jan 05, 2006 7:57 am

Hi

I dont normally post on these forums for a lack of a toyota.
But latelyI have been looking at a possibility of a GTZ trueno (AE101)
I have always been fond of the cars and I have seen one in my price range!

however it has low 200Kish km's

I have been driving mitsi's for years, but I think its time for some reliable, that goes well and looks good to boot!

how resilient is the 4AGZE?
A friend of mine reckons he knew of one running well way into 350,000 plus... without much care at all ( of course I would look after it well! )

Is there anything I should look for? Any way of telling if this motor is past its life? Should I put my faith in the mighty toyota reliability or stick with my electrically hopeless Galant

Any comments/thoughts greatly appreciated!

If its had a good life i.e. been maintained etc, I'd expect it should be ok, but for a car with those km's do expect it to use a little oil n such.
sc bearings would be something to look at- Ive know several people swap their sc's at around those kms, but also others who had fine ones at the 200g range.
If I was looking to buy I'd just check all the usual and see how it goes
Im guessing the km's are shown in a lower price?

If you can buy the car and still have enough left over to get it fixed up, then it would be an excellent choice. They're bloody nice cars, but they're not miracle machines or anything, they'll still have issues at that age / number of kms.

The suspension will probably be Superstrut, which means it'll cost a bit of cash if you have any trouble with it.

Mine got to 290,000 easily enough. Was starting to blow a little smoke, but what can you expect. If its a good one then you'll be right for ages if you look after. Get compression check and all that sort of stuff done if you really want to, should give you a basic idea of how the engine is looking.

How much is he asking Dan?

They are getting pretty damn rare now... Worse comes to worse you could blackmail hrt into rebuilding the engine :D (just twist his nipples or something, it will work ;)).

They go... alright... not superquick (might sit next to daves car stock?), with a pully kit you might pull ahead, but hes running more boost now so what does it matter :D (and soon to have bucket loads more), so you wouldnt have a chance.

make sure it has an lsd though too!

Hey Matty
I was wondering how long it would be before you read this post.

How much is he asking Dan?

round about 3.5K

They go... alright... not superquick (might sit next to daves car stock?), with a pully kit you might pull ahead, but hes running more boost now so what does it matter Very<br />Happy (and soon to have bucket loads more), so you wouldnt have a chance.

Its not always about being quicker than everyone Cozy (ok so sometimes it is!). I wanted one because its good around town, they are indeed abit more rare these days, and it looks good too. It is also about the right price with my income~!
Dave is upto the engine build, gearbox rebuild, turbo and intercooler plus comp install, so its gone be a weapon very soon! So Im guessing taking him on isnt going to be very wise at all.

I saw the pully kit on TM for 4 hundy, not sure if she could take it with the km's.

Just a question is the superstut any good? it changes the camber of the tyres when cornering?

No, it keeps the camber static... (or at least it trys to)

superstrut arms go out over time (knocking noise, car can feel like it needs a wheel alignment)

but yes, easily enough fixed

pully kits you can get from Evil_Si on here, he makes em for $350 i think, with a swap for your old pully.

Yeh, daves car is now going to be SLOWER in a stright line, due to not having traction bahhahaha.

anyway yeh, if im bored i might pop around one day, say hi, yaknow the usual.

Ended up being real rough exterior, lights needed changing, bit of paint, rust spots. Superstrut arm was out in the left front corner ( knocking! )
It also idled funny..............

so the guy offered it to me for like 3250, so i said look Ill take it cos it needs a bit of work, but thats ok... we took it were about the leave Invers...

It began to show signs of some serious trouble ( a large oil leak, the guy knew about it too!!)

I took it back and he said" look you have to take the car now, you bought it off us"

Dave and I said, nah, sorry it was like 30 minutes ago, its still your car and you never mentioned the serious oil leak or the idling! ( even tho he knew )

The guy who was like 50ish and his son got super pissed off, swearing and abusing us, saying they wouldnt return my cheque. I said I would cancel the cheque anyway, they finally gave it back to me ( promptly ripped up )

Just got back now, bad experience. Bit of a lemon and a half!

heres the listing
http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=44230743&key=133590

Just plain rubbish, no mention of any problems even when I asked the guy about aspects of its running!

not very happy at all, but at least I managed to not waste the money on junk!
oh well maybe next time I will be more careful.

(Interesting news is that the dash light up and aircon lights in the galant gave up on the way back, hard to drive without any indication of speed or revs....just a fuse I imagine...)

bummer about the experience, but there will always be another one of them if thats what you want, there not what I call rare yet.
I like how you found a large oil leak and in the question section they say:

'...no hasn't used any oil...'
ofcorse it also has a special 'Cam bout' recently done too...

(man was I wrong)

I was fortunate my best mate came along, he backed me up to the nines....hes not easily blinded by "minor" car trouble. That man deserves a DB

I actually left my cellphone ($99 dollar one) in the trueno (took it just in case), I wasnt going back noway no how! new cellphone time for sure........
