Postby escortman » Fri Jan 13, 2006 7:38 pm

droppin a 20v in the ae82fx, will be doin 2.25in exhaust, and hav seen sock filters put on the quad throttle bodies if i did this i was also thinking of puttin a airscoop just in front of these to get some air in there, but i was also wondering can the ecu b chipped, on trademe i saw a auction where the guy sed toyota ecus cant b chipped, if they can be how much would a slitgh in crease in performance chip cost

you can and you cant....
SARD and TOMS can, as they work very closely with toyota, so have access to the info needed. its not just a quick replaceing of a chip either, they have to add another whole level containg several components to the circuit board.

forget the socks. keep the surge tank.
also fit the air box and duct cold air to it. use a K&N panel filter
fit an oil catch can and run it on the best fuel you can get

I've got Mine's ECU in my 20v, I've pulled it apart (curiosity), It looks like they removed CPU, soldered the socket/cable to it wich is going to daughter board, wich has normal setup (CPU is separate from ROM chip)... it looks like they kept the stock main board. So it is possible to copy them and "chip it", the daugther board's complicity is average (can be done at home), and does not contain many components (all of them are readily available from shelf).
For gains wich this ecu gives it is not worth it. Tuning practically imposssible. Unless some one has "cracked" the firmware, and has good idea about tuning .. (real time tuning is not really achievalbe with this setup)...

If you turbo, youl will need an aftermarket ecu anyway.

If you cant find a SARD or TOMS ECU, you could always use a APEXi SAFC2 with the standard ECU to put a bit more fuel in where its needed. You can get upto 10% power increse when tuned correctly.
