Here's an interesting read, an SAE Technical paper on the development of the 2ZZ-GE engine

Only other one I could find was the 1ZZ-FE which I've added a link to. I also have some interesting papers on the last Honda Turbo F1 engine & the Chrysler Hemi engine, but they're not in electronic format so I can't upload them.
must go look.....

That should test your searching skills

I've uploaded a couple more papers that may be of use to those with an interest in technical info related to automotive engineering.

It is interesting to note that they run a spacer between the intake manifold and the head.... For the sake of making the engine sound sportier! 8O

My 3sge has a similar spacer, I wondered what it was for.
And that wasnt the answer that I was expecting!

yeah, but it could be there for a different reason on the 3s. 4ages have that too.

Yes that's what I though too.
Noise suppressing insulation could not be added to the inside of the engine hood, because the hood line was low. Acoustic intensity was measured and a rubber spacer was added between the intake manifold and the block . This filled a volume which was acting as a resonance chamber.

I've done a bit of searching on the SAE website and have discovered that there are papers available on the following engines and transmissions, but they only available as paper copies and cost $US12 each

1FZ-FE
2TZ-FE
1G series
JZ series
4A-GE
3S-FE (not 100% sure about thise as the engine isn't listed in the title but the dates are about right and a search for 3S-FE brings them up)
1UZ
AZ series
1MZ
U140E transmission (Caldina?)

There's probably a lot more but it limits searches to 200 results.

Also of some interest may be online copies of articles published in their Automotive Engineering magazine. http://www.sae.org/automag/

Actually I read that too, but in the introduction on page 1, it says:

Other features such as a reinforced ladder frame, and an intake manifold spacer was utilized for a sporty engine sound.

I wonder what the difference would be, if it were replaced with a spacer that wasnt rubber.
