What to do with my rear guards on my AE85

Postby Rick » Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:15 pm

I have started to dummy fit my suspension etc.. on my car and with the rims/tyre bolted on the tyres stick out pass the guards by about 15mm to 20mm, does this mean I have to have flares to cover the top of the guards or is it fine the way it is? what are the WOF requirments for this type of thing?

im pretty sure you will have to get flares to cover the tyre if that makes sense, i dont think the tyres are allowed to stick out further than the guard.... have a look on www.ltsa.govt.nz

I think if you get flares it will be o.k

as for Low_Aa63

i'm sure it could well be the offset, but it could also be a hilux setup, due to the fact hilux diffs tend to be wider and can stick the wheels out further

it doesn't really matter what it is

but calling someone a noob who is actually correct in his question

makes you the noob Low_Aa63

a correct question??.....no.....

And if that diff wasnt shortened the wheels would protrude alot further than that!

no shit sherlock, does it say anywhere in this topic anything about what diff rick has?

so for all AE85.6 knows it may have a wide hilux diff causing the wheels to stick out

which is why i would think that AE85.6 asked the question "why are they wider?"

which is not a noob question in anyway at all

Now to stop any more confusion  , my ae85 is running an unshortened hilux diff (about 1480mm disc to disc) with unknown offset rims.

Either get flares, shorten the diff, or change the offset of the wheels if theres enough parallel meat on the stud holes to do so (bout $25 a wheel), but then youre limited to those 2 wheels on the back.

Acording to the basic wof rules, the wheels are not allowed to stick out past the "origional" body lines. Bolt on or stick on flares are not considered origional,(thats what they told us on our last wof course). I think if you do a nice job you could try your luck and see what happens.

can't you have body "extentions" certified so that from a wof point of view they're considered "original"? I remember reading something along those lines but don't recall exactly.

Have a plan to widen arches (or shorten diff. Just chose one, they both haves good and bad points. Of which I know nothing about at all.).
But wait to see what the friendly WOF guy says.
No point doing something if you don't have to.

http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/publications/vir-manual/general-vehicles/10-tyres-wheels-and-hubs-v2-3.pdf

LVV certification is not required provided that:
Aftermarket wheel fitments
• the wheels:
- are a known and reputable brand non-OE item, and
- would be considered an appropriate fitment for the vehicle type by the wheel manufacturer, and
- are not modified, and
- spacers or adaptors are not fitted.
• the tyre tread:
- does not protrude beyond the unmodified original body panels (including
unmodified factory-fitted mudguard extensions), or
- protrudes beyond the unmodified original body panels, but is covered by
aftermarket or modified mudguard extensions or modified body panels, and the track width has increased by no more than 25 mm from OE.

You are basically caught on the track width, but will need cert for the new diff anyway. So talk to your certifier and see what he wants you to do, judging by photos at least some small flares will be required.
