Degreasing advice needed

Postby Vertigo » Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:43 am

hello!

decided to start building up a 4AGE.. the block i aquired is good, but covered in grease. i figure, if im rebuilding it anyway (and i will be taking it apart a few times as i learn my way around), why not get it nicely clean?

so ive bought some degreaser and a brush, and its working (slowly), but i just want to hear from people that have done this before, what should i be doing to make the process faster?
TVIS just kicked in, yo!

Ive got this sprayer for my air compressor, which is like a spray gun where you fill the bottle with kero, and it blasts it out.

I have NEVER seen something so clean so quickly before! I was scrubbing my cross member by hand for ages without much luck... And then I gave it a blast with the kero, and wow! It cleaned it really well, really quickly.

I want to borrow this!! :D
I need to clean my diff housing so I can properly spray it. And this sounds easier than a toothbrush and a wirebrush. :P

Oh yes, TOTALLY reccomended...

I would have spent about 1/2 an hour scrubbing part of the cross member with a brush and kero, to clean a little tiny spot of it, not very well.

But then a blast with the kero, then a quick scrub, then another blast, and it looked brand new! 8O

As for actual advice, put some degreaser in a spray bottle, spray it on give it a quick scrub with a wire brush then hose off.

above works well, but if you dont want to spend much cash:
often I use afew stiff scrubbing brushes (one pot n pan one and another general flat scrubbing brush). Run hot as water into a bucket and mix 2 scoops of laundry powder and about the same of sunlight (both stollen from inside the house). use a screwdriver to scrape off any thick layers of crap then scrubb away. On really bad blocks, I do it twice. End up with something you could eat off (if one desired) which is ready to paint once dry. Only takes an hour at best and costs very little.
Cant believe im still a member here.
