Best tyres for the job?

Need some new black sticky things for the front of my car and basically, i've heard good stories and bad stories about tyres (as you do).

I was looking at a set of Eagle F1 tyres (have crazy tread pattern):

/././.\..\
(use your imagination )
Anyway was told by several people they are excellent tyres, swear by them etc. but i also have several saying they are rubbish.

So can anyone give me the low down on how well they perform? (17"x235x45) Or suggest anything else in the relative price range that would be better ($210)

They definately aint rubbish but can't comment on the price and and how long they last vs other models.

goodyear eagle f1 gsd3 , voted best overall tyre by tyre rack 2005 .
these things stick like sh*t to a blanket , i ride on them , put them on all my friends cars , and familys cars andi have alot of satisfied customers who r riding on them

Yeah, I have went thru 2 set of them, will never use anything else for the road, GSD3 are far superior tyres then anything else I used. And they last about 20-30k aswell (although I did 50k on GTradials but they were crap compare to GSD3)

But if you have a heavy car they can delaminate, so just watch them.

I recently (as in two days ago )
just purchased 2x 205/40/17 for my GTZ AE101 on the front.

Massive improvement in handling and getting that power to the wheels, but its hard to compare since my old tyres were shagged ( previous owner...tut tut Toyo Proxies)
I have got a review on like 7 tyres brands compared on an F1 typhoon ( now thats power) and heres the lineup.....

1st Michelin Pilot Sports (being the best and most expensive))
2nd Dunlop Sport Max
3rd Goodyear Eagle F1's ( BEST tyre in wet by far, wet braking and cornering...so my choice living in Moist Dunedin )
4 Bridgestone Sp Sport 9000
5 Toyo proxies ( what was on the car, but super bald, so cant judge )
etc....

I picked up tyres for $175 each ( my sisters BF works at a tyre place ), so your 210 probibly isnt too bad as your looking at different profile.

I love the tyre pattern, its not very often the tyre pattern looks that attractive....but people have commented on it. Retail price was about $250-$280 so considerable saving there.

So yeah impressed with them so far

I was gonna put them on my heavier audi (1680kg), but got warned off by lots of audi drivers who has issues with delamination. It seems to only affect heavy cars. Everyone rates them 100% for performance though. They may have fixed the issue by now, but who knows.

They were the control tire for the Production Racing series last year, and the Evo's and WRX's were literally ripping the tire tread to bits in only a couple of races, so I can suggest that if you're doing hard track time, then you should avoid these tires. The same warning would apply for many soft road tires though

I 've had Pilot Sports 1's on my audi, and they were a good tyre. But the Pilot Sport II are f'n amazing !! (also f'n expensive). Have Toyo proxies on my wifes cars, and i would also rate them a good. Had Dunlop SP~8000 in the past, and i would rate these as very average.

I had major problem with toyo proxies - the sidewall started cracking big time, and it was on a AE101, which is by far not very heavy...

Well, looks like those F1s are a go, will keep my continentals on the back, as i'm pretty impressed with them this far, very sticky.

Yeah when my mate changed them over, he commented on the poor Toyo sidewalls, F1's are much stiffer he reckoned, but recommneded NOT to inflate beyond 30psi ever...

What were psi you inflating them too?

I've had T1-S 195/55R15 and T1-R 205/50R15 on the front (in turn) over the last 4 years, and I've never had a problem with the side wall cracking. If they are, I'd suspect under-inflation causing excessive sidewall flex as the tyre rotates causing the cracking

IIRC, the T1's only have a single layer of steel belt and rubber in the side wall, except the lower profile ones which have two layers of steel belt and rubber.

I would never ever uderinflate my tyres, in fact I always check them once a week and keep them at 36psi...

Not inflate the F1s to over 30psi? I have 38psi in the rears and 34psi in the fronts 205/40R17 front and 235/40R17 rear.
