unless you want to go glass for the weight, why not get the rust cut out and new metal welded in?- that would be cheaper than making a glass boot imo.
If you do get someone to make a glass one however, see if they have any previous work to show- ive seen some less then good ones around over the years.

Postby saundersjf » Mon Jan 30, 2006 8:31 pm

yeah i was goning to do that but its right in the front corner so its not going to be too cheap...
and there is rust on the undersidez of the frames.. so unless they sqwart some sort of rust wax stuff then its going to rust through again..

Put jenolite on it, grind it, if its all the way through, go to a panel beater, they'll patch it up with new metal, if you're cheap and clever, you can tig in your own piece, then you prime it and paint.

Fibreglassing is difficult to get light with enough strength, If you do do it, use alumminium strips on edges lips, to give it a bit more strength. and remember, if in a crash and the fibreglass gets broken, it'll ruin the entire thing. Remember, the more rigibility, the more critical the breaking point. Oh, use chop strand as well, and buy it from boat builders, heaps cheaper.

Thats supposing you do it urself?

Depending on the quality of the glass and the work, heat can severely warp it (Leaving it in the sun). Take a look at any moderate priced glass kits of a few years old and theyll be warping away from their lines and clips... Thats the only down side of glass i know...

well i have now been rust repairing my mr2 for a little while, luckily i have a mig welder, so im just cutting big squares of steele out of mine and welding new squares in place reshaping steele so that it looks natural is hard, but be patient and you will be fine... im indenting the steele that i weld inplace so that i can skim a layer of bog over the steele to make things look perfect

while i do all this i am learning how this car rusts, and am taking rust preventitive measures so hopefully the car can live another 17 years without any furthur work

god luck, pm me if you need any help on rust prevension

Peace
