3sg(t)e..... Have to take intake cam out for headbolts? Argh

Postby RomanV » Mon Feb 06, 2006 4:29 pm

Hi folks.

I was just wondering if any other 3sge/3sgtes are the same?

Im going to have to take the intake cam out, to get the heabolts in.
What a PITA! I was hoping to leave the head assembled, as from the workshop.

This wasnt necessary on my gen 2 engine, Is it the same for gen 3's?

Or I could be wrong (I hope so!) As it was rather late last night (5.30am) when I was looking at it.

I had to take my intake cam out to get one of the bolts out. I think it might be because the belt end of the cam has the larger hex/spanner flats so you can hold it for undoing the pulley bolts, and maybe the gen 2 na cams didn't have that?

The cam angle sensor down the other end of the head DEFINITELY blocks one of the holes... there's no other way but to pull the cam out.

The others werent much better too.

valve angle

Postby Celica RA45 » Mon Feb 06, 2006 6:43 pm

because the valve angle has been closed up .on gen 2 and 3 the pulleys are about 30mm apart on the gen 4 they are 5mm apart also the head is taller .
dave they are 13.8 ft lbs as in bearing caps for the cams same as gen 2 and 3 in torque settings

Aaah okay, thanks Glenn. 8)

The engine is mostly reassembled, I'm just missing a few minor nuts/bolts, and I obviously cant put a few parts on until I get the head torqued down properly.

Its getting there though. 8)

LOL @ Akane, he's only got a Gen II...Never mind Akane, one day you might have a real engine

BTW Caldina engines can also have the head removed without removing the cams.

A gen 2?! 8O
Do they still make parts for that?!
Actually they're not so bad. I hear that they were hand assembled in the factory! 8)
But unfortunately, Homo habilis didnt quite have the brain development at this stage to do a good job.

Does the Caldina not have the cam angle sensor? I suppose it wouldnt. This is the part that is in the way the most, there's definitely no squeezing past that thing!
