Defensive Driving Course

Finally getting around to doing the defensive driving course so I can get my full sooner. Rang the AA but their next one isnt for another month. Does anyone know any other driving schools or anything that does them aswell? Or is it only the AA that do it? Apparently its a waste of time, just sitting there filling out a book while you listen to them talking. But I want my full licence 6months earlier so its worth it. Cheers!

I wouldn’t say that something you learn that could possibly save your life is a waste of time. If you go in with the attitude that all it is going to do is allow you to gain your full quicker then IMO your not going to get the most out of the course.

Sure its a theory based course, but its theory around doing little things while you are driving i.e. wheels pointing straight forward while at an intersection waiting to turn right etc, while this may not seem like much it could be the difference between you getting shunted forward or getting shunted in to the path of an on coming truck, 4 X 4 or car.

Don’t know of others that do it, but the AA one seems to be a pretty good one, I say wait for the next course and do that

Yea I guess that is true. Talking to my friend that has done it he said that if you walk in thinking you are the shizz then you wont learn anything. I might give some driving companies a ring later on.

If you learn something from the course then you prabably needed to do it
I didn't learn anything from it.... but as said it cuts down the restricted time.

Attitude is a big thing when it comes to things like this, its no different to Leon running the driver days, if you rock up thinking "I know it all" then you may as well not bother.

As PC said in a round about way some will learn from it and for others this sort of thing is just second nature, who knows you may just learn something

Personal opinion having done one that its a good way to get 6mths of your licence wait...

but... Most of the stuff taught is basic common sense, although a lot of people lack that.

You'll find these courses often full of people who HAVE to do it as part of their getting a licence or getting it back.

I'm pretty sure most driving instructors can set you up on one, can't remember who i did mine with it was so long ago but don't think it was with the AA

Yeah, I've done 2.
One because work paid for it and one to keep my wife company because she had to do it.
It's a slow course, but the ideas they teach are worth it.

Look at community education guides at various colleges. I did mine at Onslow college, taken by a triple A instructor from their Newlands branch.

How long did your one take to complete?

I'm pretty sure it was 4 nights - they usually do it on a Tuesday and a Thursday over two weeks. I think they have a website, otherwise they have the booklets for community education at public libraries.

edit - heres a link to the Onslow site. You've just missed the March one, the next one is in June. But different colleges hold them at different times, depends on your area. Search 'Community Education' in google.

Im not going to bother with it anymore. By the time i actually do it, its not worth it because I can go for my full in may anyway. Just saves me the money
