Low Volume Certificates

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a Low Volume Cert on a car that is not compliable?

I had a look at one today which was bought into the country after laws were put in place but the guy that is selling it said that it might be able to get a Low Volume Cert for it.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Tried looking for it on the LTSA site but nothing really that makes sense :/

Are you talking about a car that doesn't meet the Frontal Impact Standards - i.e. a pre 96 model?
If so, generally speaking the answer is no.

We've been down this track with cars suitable for rallying before.
Whilst a small number were compied a few years ago, the loophole was closed pending LTSA approving a satisfactory formula.
The LTSA staff member driving this has since moved on and I suspect it's now buried in the too hard basket.

Not a chance in hell of getting it certed.
As TRD Man said there were a few cars that got through BUT these were full caged/harnessed/airbags removed competition cars where the safety factors of frontal impact systems were already negated. And a stop has been put to that until there is a way to ensure the cars that get through don't end up back as normal road cars. There is a very good reason non-compliable cars sell so cheap.

looks like i might be getting it - just will have to try other ways of using the bits... like swapping over all the bits... or something.

actually you could probably get a cert, but that wouldn't mean that you would be able to drive it on the road.

Kinda like having a cert but not having a wof is still illegal, having a cert but not even being registered is also illegal :)

And the reason I say you could probably get one is that if you want to compliance a car which is modified beyond the set threshhold, you have to get a cert before you get it complianced. :)

Well you could get it certed if it has mods, but you can't get it certified for not meeting frontal impact standards which is what he is really asking.

Adrian, I'd give one of the certifiers a call and discuss the issue with them; they may be able to give you some guidance.

Try Mark Stokes, unsure of his number but he advertises in Petrolhead, NZ Hot Rod and other magazines.
Or ph 0800 4 CERTZ (might be his number...)

Actually you've just stumbled across the only possible exception that I am aware of. You may want to talk to me at the office about it some time. It's possible, but there's a list of conditions about two A4 pages long. It's taken over four years of butting heads with LTNZ to get that far. It requires lots of money, a car that was once FIA homologated, and you to have held a competition licence for years.

Short answer. No. Not possible. It will still be uncompliable.
