SW20 - Speedo/Dash.

Question, SW20 suddenly stops showing how fast it's going on the speedo and the trap no longer records/shows distance travelled.

What could be the problem?
All else still works fine and dandy, just the speedo does not show speed anymore nor how far has been travelled.

Easy/hard/costly fix?
How to fix it I'm also interested in if this is a known sort of problem with the SW20s.

I think it's a 1990 from memory and it's N/A.

you mean its intermittend?

prob go with a faulty cble. oh or these have sensors?

might be just a loose wire... gut under it and see whether its plugged in properly

That, or the little pin inside the speedo drive will have sheared.
Happened on mine, there is a L shaped section that bolts to the gearbox, which the cable screws on to, and has a little pin which connects to the driven gear. I think it cost me about $18 retail at Toyota some years back. All of 10 minutes work to fix, just jack the back end up, dislocate your elbow to be able to undo the bolt and you're away

How hard is the speedo cable to replace?
What exactly is involved in replacing it?

first thing that I'd do, would be to unscrew the speedo cable from the gearbox.

Give the end of a cable a pull... Mine snapped off about 5cm up from the gearbox end of the cable.

It saves you pulling out the dash etc. to see if it's snapped at that end.

While the speedo cable is unplugged, you could also check the speed signal thing that the cable plugs into... incase it is worn like has been suggested.

If you have to swap the speedo cable, you need to pull off the under trays, and maybe drop the crossmembers/brackets under the car which hold the hand brake cables.

And obviously you've got to pull out the dash unit, which is easy.
The speedo cable just plugs into the back of the dash unit.

It's fairly straight foward really.

Malcolm has got a speedo cable attached to his SW20 that he's wrecking, and it's 90% out already, cos I pinched the coolant lines from it, which the speedo cable clips on to.

Although, you might have to go get it yourself, Malcolm will be.... preoccupied.

Anyone know of a partnumber for that other little signal thingee the cable plugs into so I can get one from Toyota?

If on the odd chance its actually the driven gear thats stripped, I have one here I can sell you cheaper than Warwick can.
Come to think of it though, it may not work in a NA gearbox

My car also does this.
Tacko works fine, speedo dosn't.
it reads low, then stops working. after driving for a little bit, i get an engine warning light. When i check the codes, i get a code 42 (or 24, can't remember atm) which is the speed sensor signial. the pdf i have says its something to do with the ignition coil. how do i fix it?
