first thing that I'd do, would be to unscrew the speedo cable from the gearbox.
Give the end of a cable a pull... Mine snapped off about 5cm up from the gearbox end of the cable.
It saves you pulling out the dash etc. to see if it's snapped at that end.
While the speedo cable is unplugged, you could also check the speed signal thing that the cable plugs into... incase it is worn like has been suggested.
If you have to swap the speedo cable, you need to pull off the under trays, and maybe drop the crossmembers/brackets under the car which hold the hand brake cables.
And obviously you've got to pull out the dash unit, which is easy.
The speedo cable just plugs into the back of the dash unit.
It's fairly straight foward really.
Malcolm has got a speedo cable attached to his SW20 that he's wrecking, and it's 90% out already, cos I pinched the coolant lines from it, which the speedo cable clips on to.
Although, you might have to go get it yourself, Malcolm will be....
preoccupied.
