Electronic Waterpumps

Postby z|gen » Sat Mar 25, 2006 8:51 pm

hey guys
im considering getting an electronic waterpump for the starlet, since the existing waterpump on the engine (4age 16v bluetop tvis) hits on the chassis.

does anyone know of the electric ones are smaller? and by how much,

and where to get from? and rough price?

edit: also anyone know if its possible to get single crankshaft pulleys for a 4age rather than a double one, which is used to run aircon and power steering?

cheers

One 4age I got came with a single row crank pulley.
The engine is a bigport 7rib.
The pulley looks like it is factory - no cutting / lathe marks on it.

EWP is approx $250. Controller is another $250.
They are good. I run one on my 4AGE (standard Bluetop).
The EWP mounts into the bottom radiator hose so shouldn't hit on anything.
I recommend getting the controller as the EWP is a bit large for the old 4AGE. If you ran it at full bore the whole time you will probably find it hard to get any heat in the engine...
Also. If you do this I would suggest ripping the entire factory waterpump setup out and throw it in the bin. I've run mine for well over six months now with no issues. I guess six months isn't long but it's been so reliable so far.

sweet as dude,
yeah, segedins emailed back with those prices,

what size pump are you running? are you using the 80ltr/min one or the 110ltr/min?

with the factory waterpump, when you removed it, what did you put in place? did you just make up an alloy plate with a hose coming out?

I've still got my original pump on there at the moment. That's why i say rip it off. I'm going to build a little plate and tubing setup that simulates what I'll be taking off. I guess you could just "blank" over where the water pump bolts onto. I haven't investigated fully yet.

I'm running the 80L/min. I'm pretty sure it's heaps big enough. Although the 110 could be a fun experiment if you had something with special requirements.

Also. If you're thinking of a controller I'd wait around to for the new 110 version as it's going to have lots and lots of goood features.

Here's some of the things they planned to incorporate.
Built in cooling timer (think turbo timer), will cool to either set temp or set time.
Digital readout which can show either set point temp, or current temp.
Secondary output relay to trigger another device at a set temp.
One LED to show when the pump is running, and one to show when the relay is active...

I don't know how many of these are going to make it into the final product. But even just a couple will make it a much more useful item.

Alternatively. I'll buy a new controller and sell you my old EWP80 version controller. :D

if you already have a double pulley just take it to an engineering business and get them to machine the second pulley off. thats what I done to mine - only about 5 minutes work.
