amplifier cutting off

Postby dvsLEVIN » Tue Mar 28, 2006 12:32 am

hey guys.. a question about my amp.. i got a 760w max pioneer amp and am running an alpine type e 12inch sub off that.. but when i crank up the volume too much the bass just turns off and comes on in a while and then turns off again ?!?!.. can anyone tell me why it is that that happens and what is needed.. would installing a capacitor solve the problem ??

My subs did it too, except my entire stereo would shut down for a min or 2. Does your amp have a HPF and LPF switch you cn change? Cos all i had to do was turn off the HPF switch on mine and it stopped doing it

Isn't it just like a protection thing?
So they don't overheat and blow up?

My Rockford amp did it a couple of times in summer last year when I had it up quite loud.. I just let it cool down and it was fine again..

... and turn the gains down. Gain is a sensitivity setting, not a volume knob.

amp is cutting out when it goes into protection mode.
Check: power wire (guage, termination, fusing), ground wire (grounded to chassis of car and sanded back ground point, adequate guage wire), and possibly battery (battery may be too small ie a 300CCA battery is rather pitiful for an upgraded stereo system). Also, check gains on amplifier (gains may be set too high and cause clipping to occur pusihing amp into protect).

Capacitor may help but will eventually be a large paperweight/bandaid in the future if you intend to fix your problem correctly.

Position of the amplifier relative to open air is important as well.. think intercoolers.. you need air flow to get best performance, same with amplifiers.. air flow cools down internal components providing a better operating environment to work in. If you amp is smothered somewhere example between the seat and the box then i'd say that you'd best to move to provide ventilation. Same goes for mounting upside down, or close up underneath parcel tray

The remote wire on the head unit could be loose.. does the amp turn off completly? If it has a power light, watch if it flashes.
