Postby XS1V » Fri Apr 21, 2006 12:20 am

Hey

I have a gt4 thats shell is worse for wear and was wanting to swap all running gear onto another shell. Are the shells the same as the gtr's?? Cant imagine they would me much different, let me know though :)

By shell you're talking just panels? or like a rolling body? Panels I found to be fine swapping unless you have a w/body... with the exception of the bonnet (top mount and all). If you wanted a whole rolling body then yeah 4WD into FWD just doesn't go.

The floorpan from about the gearstick back is *completely* different. Don't believe what you read on US forums about how someone fitted the 4wd running gear to their base spec US Celica in a few hours one weekend while drunk...

Oh yeah, Pannels yes but the impression i get is he wants to fit st185 running gear into a St182.

Just wont work unless you put 3sgte into it with a fwd gearbox that has been done in NZ before.

Hmm not what i wanted to hear at all but will just have to figure somthing else out then.

Yup what i wanted to do was get a complete bare shell to put the running gear into, bolt the rear subframe into etc hopeing toyota had made one chassis with different set ups

Just some No8 wire (No, not you Rory!) and duct tape and she'll be ready for cert in no time, Brad! :D
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

it can be done

sort of

would prob npot be allowed on the road.

had a custy come in wanting a part for his gt4. forget what it wa, something to do with the rear diff i think
went out, got the numbers..... didnt take much notice unitll i couldnt find the part he wanted..... then it dawned on me..... model number said st183....
wtf thats not a gt4 i said.
went and took another look..... front half st183 (including original build plate) rear half st185. full 185 running gear, interior and body work......

but anyway, its a major job, one step away from scratch building it

Done properly there would be no issues with getting it certed for the road, not much more that the work thats gone into the rear of my Starlet. However as with most things, if the factory build it buy the factory version. It will be far far cheaper to buy another ST185, swap over any good bits you want from yours and then sell off the rest.
