noob tiptronic auto question.

Postby MasCam » Tue Mar 28, 2006 9:21 pm

I have a caldina with the tiptronic auto in it and the question is ...

How does the automatic select the correct mode (park neutral drive etc) and how does it change up and down in the tiptronic mode?

The reason I ask is that at the moment the tiptronic pushes forward to change up a gear and pulls back to change down, this is just wrong!! If it uses electrical switching to determine the changing then I should be able to switch a couple of wires or the switches to convert it to the other way around.

I am assuming that it is electric as it changes down automaticaly when you come to a halt, the previous Caldina's had shift buttons on the steering wheel and it won't let you shift into 4th until it is warm.

But then as they say assumption is the mother of all toyspeed posts

There is nothing wrong with it being electrical as it should allow for easier modification yay :p :p

As for the buttons on the steering wheel, I don't have them as they were deleted for the ST246 caldina's anyway they were a PITA, I drove one of the ST215 caldina's with the buttons and they were just not quite in the right places and I found myself using the stick to change the tiptronic anyway. I have toughts about a set of paddles to change later on though.

I was driving a few (hundred) tiptronics in my life, in my opinion it is waste of time, they drive best at full auto mode, in some cases they let you rev slightly higher, but if you count increased delay between shifts (AT lag + human vs just AT lag), it counter weights any other advantages (except one - shift down while cornering, put thats easily fixed, just move handle sideways so it will go in tiptornic mode thus holding gear and after corner put it in full auto).

 I had the exact same argument with a mate of mine, Should definatly be the other way round.

Mazda 6's are the only cars i've driven that are the right way round.

Yeah it is definatly the wrong way around my scientific resoning is that if you are braking hard into a corner you are leaning forward with the G's being developed so it is just right that you bang the stick forward and the same when you are accelerating, you are being pushed backwards so trying to push the stick forward is far harder.

As for leaving it in auto sergei, I agree with you when it comes to acceleration but as for the cornering I prefer to have it down in the correct gear before I pick up the apex of the corner, to carry the most speed through, the only may to get the auto to kick down is to get on the throttle far to early meaning you have to drop your entry speed down or you will run wide on the exit.

And yes I know if I really wanted to do that sort of thing I whould have bought a manual but the wife likes the auto and you have to make compromises sometimes. At the moment this is the car that our familly needs rather than the one I would ultimatly want

Next car will have to be a DSG transmission so we can have the best of both worlds :D :D

it also depends on the tiptronic... some cars will run more agressively with tiptronic activated ("fun mode") and be more docile in full auto

hey
i have just got a 97 st215 wagon
however i cant seem to figure the tiptronic
when i move the stick into manual mode there are only "down" buttons available on the steering wheel
now to me a triptronic should be able to be changed both up and down
am i doing something wrong or is it just not an option?
any help would be appreciated :D

also has anyone been able to get a deacent tv signal on their nav tv?

from what I remember there is one button on the front of the stering wheel spoke and another one on the back of the spoke. From what you have said I presume that the down button is on the front and visible and the up must be behind.

That being said I don't own one and is just what I remember from a test drive.
