having done both numerous times, i would pick the coastal route for time saving and fun, The Alpine route has some amazing scenery, but real long boring straight roads, especially in the mckenzie basin, used to sit on the speed limiter on them but they are well patrolled now so be careful, also at this time of year when it gets colder there is ice in bad places

I would sugest Picton to CHCH along the coast, Lewis pass etc is great but it's about 2 hours slower at the same speed. Take the inland scenic route along SH72 from Rangiora to Timaru, passed Mt Hutt and through Geraldine. Has great roads and is quicker than SH1 if you don't corner like a nana. For more inland goodness you could take the turnoff at Geraldine and go passed Lake Tekapo etc down to Invers then come back up coastal for a change of scenery.

Enjoy the drive, its a goodin
