How to shut up exhaust but still have good flow... 4agte

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Wed May 03, 2006 2:36 pm

Hey,

I've got a 4agte with 2.5inch exhaust with a standard looking 'silencer' (this was on the car when I got it), its not a blingy chrome thing, might be off of another car though. But it drones and is annoying.

I want to shut the phukn thing up.

Can anyone suggest a silencer/muffler which will flow well but be quiet? Or even any other options that there might be.

Cheers.

When I first got the car it had two but had one removed due to repairs needed to whole exhaust. It didn't sound any different afterwards to be honest.

Will they make that much difference?

I only care about flow, if possible I'd have a totally silent exhaust.

not overly relevant, but removal of the cat in my car(2zzge) made it as loud as a very loud thing, it has a real 20v buzz/whine to it, horrid sound it is.

Anyway, putting in a high flow cat appears to fix it.

rest of the exhaust is resonator and two mufflers, 2.5" front to back

Just put a 2 chamber flowmaster, or similar turbo style muffler somewhere along it, will quieten it down and still flow good.

Yup, I had a muffler in my MR2 that I got from Southwards, was all of 250mm long, with offset/offset ends and a hollow section in the centre. Was amazingly quiet, considering it was a full 3" system off the turbo, with a big shiny bling cannon at the rear.

Gotta be careful when buying "turbo" mufflers. A lot are a dog leg style which have comparably terrible flow rates... And some aren't even all that quiet...

IMO the only way to silence exhausts are using more silencing devices. Fit a high flow cat and a muffler, and if you can cram one in a resonator. Make sure they're all at least the same internal diameter as the pipework... There are plenty of stories out there where a 2 inch muffler has an ID of a tad under 2 inch. In fact, to be safe perhaps aim for an ID that is a quarter inch larger than the pipework...

Lagging the pipework with heat wrap can help, but isn't cheap... Tends to reduce high frequency ringing sound some exhausts have....

The last possibility (although technically illegal) is some of those butterfly valves that you can stick in the pipework. Apexi do some, as do some aussie people (google oz for Variflow. AES.com.au I think...)
If you've got a friendly WOFer then you might get away with fitting a valve system...
