Windom /New car question

Hi guys,

my gf and i are looking at buying a 1992 Toyota Windom GSpec done about 120,xxxkm

what are some of the things i need to look out for

and whats some of the things that go wrong with them

Obviously check the cam belts been done. And at those km's you may wanna get all belts replaced, just as a precautionary measure if they havnt been done. Other than that i think (The limits of my knowledge do not extent too far) that theyre pretty reliable.

It's a Camry, if it's been maintained it'll run forever....

Seals around the doors tend to become noisy though, one of the perks of frameless windows

But, don't buy one

head gaskets tend to play up ,especially the back head,usually rust the top of the block creating a poor sealing surface, go for the Windom with the MZ series motor not the VZ series.

IMO they are big dumb tanks

Front wheel drive
High gas usage
SLLLOOOOWWWWWW - slower than a corolla

Our old work car used to use about 15L/100km - NASTY! it was the 3litre model

were looking to buy a car that she can use to travel home and back(auckland to napier) and i can use during the week as my cars not suitable as a everyday driver,

Preferabbly toyota, under 150,000km not too large but nothing small either, prefered 1500,1800cc engine no turbos etc

we have a budget of $3000 does any one know of something thats suitable ?

must be toyotas equivilant to the mitsi v3000/magnas

Go for a nannied old Astina, Civic, 323 etc. Something tiny with nice economy and an avg motor.

If you want a run about car, get something thats easy to work on and common as mud (for parts etc).Id buy something from japan.

Just get a rolla

ae100 are cheap, really really indestructable and economical. ae101's are you next bet with the 4afe motor.

Failing that nissan sunny, pulsar, toyota starlet, corona, corsa, honda civic, integra

so many options

i dono, i had a 4a-f my self that survived a year of thrashing. Dont see why a 4e wouldnt either.

Yeah, with the price of gas going nana's, something cheap to run is a positive. My 1998 Corolla wagon with 4AFE power got a worst economy ever of 10.5km/l while towing a trailer, and got an average around town economy of 13km/l. So there's a lot to be said for that sort of thrifty consumption.

My manager's parents had one of those Rover's, or a variation on it, and it did something horrendously expensive to the gearbox. Can't recall what it was, but it cost them more money to fix than they got for the car when they sold it. That'd suck.
