Surface rust on axles

Postby beeker » Tue May 09, 2006 7:47 pm

I have purchased some new and unused AE86 axles. They have never been installed, but have been sitting around for 4 years, and have some surface rust on them. I assume just a quick sand down would be ok prior to an install ??

Advice needed.

thx in advance.

Exactly what part of the axles are you talking about (people have different definitions)
Im assuming you mean the actual interal part, the axle, in which case it will depend on the level of surface rust. If it is just minor and they polish up ok with fine sandpaper/buffer, then no problem- if its a little worse than you will just have to be careful as it can damage the seals quick as. Ideally, you want them basically to a polished finish (around the seal area).
if you do mean the housing (im sure you dont) then no probs at all.

Internal and external. Its only light rust, so i might wet sand it.

even a very fine scotch pad should be good. with the inner shafts, after you cleanup, just given them a soak/brush of oil, or smear of grease.
The outside, unless you paint or put some form of protectant on it will surface rust again, but thats not a problem.
