4age silvertop temperature issues

Hi all,

I'm having some strange issues with my engine temperature (or possibly just the sensor).

Whats happening is firstly the car seems to take a while to heat up, (as much as 10 minutes to get to full normal temp) so I'm thinking maybe the thermostat is stuck half open or something. But the weird thing is that it appears to cool down again, and the faster i accelerate, the lower the temp gauge reads.

I find that once the car has been up to working temp, and then cools down again (from driving) , if i stop driving and let it idle it will be back up to temperate in a minute or two.

I'm not sure if this is a *real* problem or if its just the appearance of a problem. Everything else seems fine and the car drives well.,

Has anyone seen this kinda thing before?

I can say 99.999% of ur issue is a fkd thermostat.
as they get old an worn they let water though so when ur idling no air is cooling the radiator it warms up, when moving temp drops due to the radiator cooling the water moving though

yea i had same problem, took ages to warm up then when driving at 100k it would creep down to as low as 50 degrees!! brought new thermostat and never had a problem since..

Check for any water leaks. I had a leaking water pump and I noticed the temp guage went up and down, like it had a mind of its own

I replaced my pump today, no more water leaking and temp guage is fine

I had same problem, fixed it by using a genuine toyota thermostat and not repco...

Had this problem too replaced the thermostat but it didn't fix the problem.. (but it was a ripco job). Will see how it goes with the new motor in the car.. Hopefully be on the road thursday

Recently had a similar problem with a rona I just bought. It would get up to temp ok, but then temp would drop when I was going down a hill, or on motorway. New genuine thermostat fixed it right up. Your problem sounds pretty similar.

Yeah, was always fun coming down the bombay hills at 11pm in the middle of winter on the way to Tauranga...
coasting downhill in gear keeps the revs above 1500rpm so with your foot off the gas the ECU supplies no gas at all.. so by the time i got to the bottom of hills the needle would often be right back at dead cold.

Ended up taping a piece of real estate sign across the radiator to keep the temp up to normal operating temp on those long open road trips.
