Blacktop Flywheel on 4afe/7afe

Postby jeremiahnz » Sun May 28, 2006 8:32 pm

Can anyone (preferably with some engineering knowledge) tell me if there is anyway to have a blacktop flywheel safely modified to fit a FE series engine? The FE series only has 6 bolts rather then 8.

Cheers

nope again, if you just want lighter could go for something like this (to the dismay of everybody anti lightening flywheels, search to find out the risks)

as 4AFE/7AFE/4AC are all the same IIRC and 1ZZFE may also be??

Yeah, I've seen that trademe one.

I was hoping that there may be some way to redrill a blacktop flywheel without sacrificing the integrity too much.

Hmmmm, when I done my silvertop conversion I had to use my flywheel from my 4afe. Two of the bolts matched up.

As my dad is a fitter and turner, we cut little bits of bolt, threaded them into the unused holes, welded them up, used a milling machine to drill and tap the new holes, and finally put the flywheel on a lathe to see if everything looked good and smooth everything out.

I had the flywheel on for about 20,000 kms and nothing went wrong. Only reason Ive put a proper one on was because I changed my clutch and had the oppurtunity to, and the "fe" one was a bit heavier.

While on topic, what have people used in their 7AGTEs? I'm assuming standard crank and the 7A flywheel?

Thanks for that. That was a similar idea to what I was thinking. Can anyone provide further opinions on whether they'd consider this to be safe?

I don't believe there's any reason why this should be a problem. Just be sure to use the right people.

Would it be fine with the standard 4afe clutch?

The clutch will fit. Depends in what condition it is in as to how long it will last. I would change it just because you have the gearbox off and wont have to do it again down the track.
