Drag day for south island Toyspeed members...

At this stage i'm really just putting out some feelers to try to gauge who and how many would be interested in a drag day in Canterbury.

We can't let the North Islanders have all the fun!!

I imagine to get the numbers it would have to be fairly open to different vehicle types etc.

I have emailed Pegasus Bay Drag Racing Club to try to find out what sort of numbers we would need and what the costs and other requirements would be, and also more importantly - whether there is a suitable date to run it on.

If you are in the south and are interested, please post a reply expressing your interest.

If you are interested and have either been involved, or have experience in organising/running an event like this, please email me as I would appreciate any assistance in getting this idea off the ground.

No really, good luck - you'll need it. The tracks normally booked out around a year in advance. If you want, I'll PM you Phillip Nelsons number (PBDRC chairman).

You do know there's a drag day open to everyone on the 28th of this month don't you? To which there's normally about... 3 TS cars showing up to.

I'll be on the microphone anyway, so if you want I can run a private little competition for you guys.

I was kinda hoping they do something like at the PowerBuilt Ruapuna Track where you can book it on tuesdays and fridays for a modest fee per driver. I suspected the weekend was never going to be a goer.

I did hear about the open event on the 28th, but I thought it would be cool to have something TS only so it can be fairly low key and everyone who wants to can come along and have some fun whatever they drive, not just the more serious tuners/modders.

It may work out that its too hard to make happen, but its worth a shot.

If this doesn't pan out I may try to get a track day at the Powerbuilt track organised, as have been down there a few times and its often quiet at this time of year (on tuesdays and fridays).

I'd rather do a drag day however, as its something I haven't done before.

I'll help you out where I can if you need me, you may well be able to get the track on a thursday / monday / whatever, just not sure what the safety regs etc will be for drag racing, whether we'll be allowed 2 cars head - to - head, if the timing gear will be available etc.

I've PM'ed you his number as well.

The normal "open" drags are genuinely open to anyone though - the majority of the racers at every meet are made up of your average 13-16 second street cars, no reason to be ashamed (unless the city turbo beats you!!), and I can almost guarantee will cost less per person than a private day would.

Youve got to remember, anyone that gives you shit for anything you do while racing your car has probably never raced before at all.
They'll just talk about how once they finish their car it'll do 10's.

Its about having fun. Its cool racing people but you're really just racing yourself. Even better when you can get a mate to come along.

In suggesting this outing I'm hoping to get an event where the aim is to have some *fun* in a legal and safe way, and where people can meet up with other car enthusiasts whatever the car they can afford to drive.

Its not about being a big shot, and as AKO has said, it may not even be possible to go head to head.

I currently go occasionally to the powebuilt track at Ruapuna with a bunch of guys from work, and our vehicles and abilities vary greatly (from 1.5 N/A cars to WRX's and a Merc E55 AMG). It a very friendly, supportive atmosphere where its as much fun to discuss your cock-ups than your brilliant performances.

Most people on TS seem genuine enough, so was hoping to get a group together who are in it for the same reasons.

Just my 2c on it anyway -

This is only worth doing IF head to head racing can go ahead, and we have access to the timing equipment.

Reasoning -

Personally I'm out there to better my PB every time, however there's nothing more fun than watching another car dissappear into the rear view mirror, or having a mega close race which is decided purely on who gets off the line / shifts quickest / rocks back and forth in the seat fastest. The favourite run I've ever had wasn't my quickest - far from it - but it was just cool. Me vs a 5.5L (?) supercharged merc... Was something like 1 tenth of a second in it at the finish line, the look on both our faces must have been priceless . So while it'd be fun to have the 1/4 mile for a bit,

Timing - without the proper timing equipment, its a waste of time, may as well find a runway to play with.

AKO - I couldn't agree more. If it turns out that its $250 a car with no head-to-head and no timing, then it ain't worth it - I'd rather just go back to Ruapuna.

Personally, considering the amount of people who turn up to the organised drags lately anyway, its not really worth it. Its open to anyone who wants to come race - just noone does come.

Drags are next Sunday, the 18th. Last month was meant to be the 28th, but they got canned cause of work on the track or something. I'm just retarded and wrote the wrong date in my previous posts

This meeting is a "have a go" day only - no race classes, just street car grudge racing all day - no delays, no farting round, just constant runs.

I'd advise taking advantage of it if anyones even remotely keen on having a go at racing - I think my mrs is borrowing the car for the day actually, so I get to watch it spit gearbox over the start line from the comfort of the tower
