Manual Boost Controllers

Postby solitaire » Tue Jun 13, 2006 8:40 pm

Hey Guys

I was gona save up and get an electronic boost controller but ive been told if im not planning to play with the boost i can just get a manual one.

I'm doing the resistor trick with the fuel cut but my question is....

1. Is this any good? seems cheap but he has covered all the base points... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Voodoo-III-MBC-Manual-Turbo-Boost-Controller-0-30-PSI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ019QQitemZ8072793856QQrdZ1
2. Anyone know of a cheap place to buy them?
3. Does anyone think that a manual boost controller is a seriously bad idea?

and

4. How high would you boost a gen1 mr2?

thanks guys

When I had my MR2 I ran a Gofast manual boost controller, worked well with minimal drop off (normally shot up to bout 14psi and backed off to 13psi), used the same one on my GSR and worked a treat!!!
As for boost levels, I never had mine above 14psi to be safe, if you still got the factory turbo it's not to much good after that anyways I dont think.

Even 10lbs with a ball and spring controller will be a huge differnce as they eliminate wastegate bleed (mostly).

I'm not saying they are bad, (cause i've never used one), but do they give you an advantage with spool up times?

Because I think that is a major plus for an EBC, is the fact that the wastegate is SHUT until the boost level is reached, not slowly opening.

Am interested to hear opions on this...

(need one for my honda city turbo :P, got a gready profec in my 4agte).

Try trade me there's heaps there.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 473350.htm

This is the one that i had in 2 of my cars and it went really well

Not to sure bout the spool up times, I had an EBC in a previous car and the only advantage about it was the high/low setting in the cabin and not having to get out and adjust it under the bonnet.

Also try Jaycar as well, they do a cheap EBC that you can build yourself and my friend who has one said thats it's great

Pull the hose out of the bottom of your boost pressure sensor and plug the hose up leaving the sensor open to the air. No more boost cut for free :)

Hmm... that would allow the engine to boost to 20psi without fuel cut? cos i like my pistons inside my block...

Yeah there's a hose in the back of the engine bay that you can pop of and quicker than you can say "who's your daddy" no fuel cut.

As far as i'm aware there's 2 types of manual controllers (possibly more) one has a spring and a ball bearing and the more you wind it out the more the ball bearing moves meaning more pressure, these are great as long as the ball bearing don't jam up like mine did..... (easily fixed but a pain in the rear) like the turbosmart one.
The other type has a needle type thing the the more you wind it out the more air can be bleed of (like the GFB one)

I've had both and both worked perfectly fine considering i only ran max 14psi. I think most people would tell you they're no good for anything above that though.

So the ball and spring is better yeah? can you tell if this one is ok? in you opinion of course... wont come hunt you down if my engine blows... but you obviously know your shit :D http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Performance/Turbos/auction-59864101.htm

I have ball and spring, cost me $30 off trade me. Absolutely no boost spike, hits full boost hard and fast (faster that without) and provide adjustment to over 25 psi (my intercooler hoses blew off)

Yeah thats damn cheap!!!! I'd go for that one if i didn't already have one for the old staz (well at the moment the turbo's a bit poked and only free boosts at 12-13psi anyways  )

But 20psi on the factory turbo :? not unless you have the C20B off the gen 3 + MR2's
