problems with ae101 gtz's

hi,

im looking at buying a ae101 gtz,
is there anything that i should be looking for that is a common problem?
any other useful info would be apreciated

super strut bushes in the rear

Excessive engine smoke

a bad knocking from the block and bang bang comming from under the bonnet is generally considered bad.

The usual things i guess :)

yeah in the front re superstrut bushes

not much else to really to look out for on these tho.

make your getting at least 7psi out ofthe s/c and that the clutch is still good.

If clutch showing signs of wear then bargain them down as they can be costly to replace if your not doing it yourself or got any hookups etc

Do the white ones rust out as bad as the AE92's? Both my white 92's have rust around the boot lid and one has just got rust all over it. On the other hand both my black ones havent got any signs of it at all!

I guess that the 101's would be coming to the stage where rust would start to show, so just have a look under the boot lip seal, spare tyre well, drain at front of doors on the bottom and the rear window... I think thats the usual suspects.

I have heard (and ive only heard from one person, but maybe someone else can confirm) that after about '89-'90 toyota used a better primer which wasnt as prone to rust. I have a '90 ae92 which doesnt have any rust, and ive checked for it too. What year are your ae92's peas?

AE101s are made out different steel. They don't rust that much. I have a front guard outside wich has big patch of bare metal, it has been like that for couple of years. Slightly surface rust.

tad different when water is sitting in places tho,

just check the usual places (around lights around windows the bottom of doors etc)

sorry yes front my bad.

The rust is due to the metal being prepped right, steamed off instead of chemically removing, however it took a while for toyota to notice that it was rusting, about 1988-1989.

And toyota NZ employed cheap labour to wet sand the oil off :O

Same here have a big dent on the rear quarter of mine with pretty much no rust and lots of bear metal, been like that for months now. its an ae92 but 1990 face lift model.

Ive had a '85 st162 and the family has had an '88 aw11 and they both rusted really badly.

I have owned my levin from since it come to me from Japan, i have had no body issues with this car

the main thing to note about the GTZ levins is that if you get one and you have body issues there are lots of parts for it body wise.

if you have engine issues you can still get bits for it, i change my oil every 10,000kms and i have done 220,000kms in it and it still goes hard and no smoke.

if you have driveline issues eg inner cvs break etc.. then your going to have issues with parts.

PARTS PARTS PARTS, they can be a real mission to find, i have part of a mitsi inner cv in my car cause i could not find a part in NZ.

So yeah Parts i have always found it hard to get parts. Now if you have the $$$ then toyota has all the parts you need but the inner CV assembly was going to cost about $1600 from japan, or $300 from the driveshaft center to modify a one.

If you want to keep the supercharger in good condition, changing the supercharger oil is a good idea. There about 130ml of it and it cost about $33 if u can get it from Toyota.

My car suffers a little from noisy injectors, but apparently its fairly common and nothing to worry about.

Superstrut always is a little problematic, but seems to be fine on most GTZ ive seen, including my own.

I would suggest you also look at some of the good points of the GTZ's too! :D

time to find yaself a dealer who knows what they are doing.....
they are no where near that price.......

parts are easy to get new, and cost no more than other corollas.

They have all been 1989 Levins... both black ones are/were facelift and the white ones are pre facelift though so maybe thats got something to do with it. I would attribute half the rust on the particulary bad one to some shoddy home panel jobs from the looks of it though.
