Removing engine, gearbox and subframe - How to?

Postby MrOizo » Thu Jun 29, 2006 10:16 pm

I'm plannign on swapping over engine, box and subframe from one ST165 GT4 to another and was wondering the best way to do this.

1 Would it be relatively easier to take engine with box attached and subframe out all on one

or

2 take engine out and then take the subframe out?

reason is the old car has upgraded bits and wouldnt want them going else where :)

depends if you have access to a hoist etc,

if so, prob easiest to drop everything at once onto a table then lift the car off,
if being done on stands, take engine etc out first

When my mates 185 was being striped to refresh the motor, we dropped the subframe and the engine in one, (and that was on stands).

We thought it was the easier way.

My mind may be playing tricks on me, but what subframe? The ST205 has a subframe that holds the suspension, the ST165 only has a cross member. On a ST165 you remove the crossmember, undo everything and drop the engine with gearbox straight out the bottom. Actually not too hard, 2-1/2 hours last time I did it (on a hoist mind).

I believe the ST185 is the same as the ST165.

Do you mean the longtidudinal rail that has the lower mounts on it? A few bolts and it's out so I always do it before engine/box.
