silvertop rods vs gze rods

we just bought a silvertop bottom end for IH8TEC (brendons) car as he melted a piston and prety much munted the bore.
We brought it for the block/crank/bearing caps etc and as i've heard alot of stories about the silvertop rods being bigger :? .

Compared his early model gze rods to the 20v silvertop rods and they silvertop rods are smaller by quite a bit???

anyone else experienced this?

The ZE rods ARE bigger than the silvertop rods (well heavier anyway). The silvertop rods are bigger than that of the blacktop.
The answer is Helmholtz!

The order of size goes from the very early gze,

to the late gze and silvertop (same rod for the year, ie a gze and silvertop of same year is likey to have same rods iirc, sure mr revhead said that),

then redtops, which are the same as late gze i beleive.

Then of course come blacktop.

silvertop ones look like twigs next to mine, i'd hate to see blacktop ones against them,

will get some picks up next time go to the workshop, to show you all.

yep early ae92 had the HUGE rods. late ae92 and all 101s had the big rods, and the blacktop the tiny ones.

4agzes use the same rods as the same year 4ages.

yeah, it's all been machined, think i'll need to modifiy the oil squirters to work, as i want them but apparently they hit the pistons, i'm sure my eng builder can work something out, 8)

Silvertop and blacktop rods

bit off topic but the bottom caps on the blacktop rods look stronger?

Id be more concerined about your pistons than your rods :P, I could sell you some 2et pistons, they can take 17:1 for weeks and still not melt

I was looking at the piston from your GTZ, and read this last night...

Many times you will see a piston that is scuffed at the "four
corners". If you look at the bottom side of a piston you see the piston
pin boss. If you look across each pin boss it's solid aluminum with no
flexibility. It expands directly into the cylinder wall. However, the skirt
of a piston is relatively flexible. If it gets hot, it can deflect. The crown
of the piston is actually slightly smaller in diameter on purpose so it
doesn't contact the cylinder walls.

So if the piston soaks up a lot of heat, because of detonation for
instance, the piston expands and drives the piston structure into the
cylinder wall causing it to scuff in four places directly across each boss.
It's another dead giveaway sign of detonation. Many times detonation
damage is just limited to this.


That sound about right ??

yeah soudns bout right lol, new motor has been machined with more clearance than factory between bores and pistons also.

run lean afr = more heat = piston expand.

don't run your car around on basemaps. tune it from the start!

he had all my old setup on, powerlink and injector (740cc).
My car ran real rich with this setup, well i had it turned rich and brendon used it as I gave it to him straight off my car.
So somehow it went lean, only think i can think of is the powerlink stopped working, or fuel filter is blocked, or something is wrong with the fuel pump.
We had all the injectors checked and they were flowing fine.
