What to do in Palmy?

Postby RS13 » Sat Jul 08, 2006 5:40 pm

Hi,

As the limit of my NI experience is not much further north than Wellington.. and I'm staying for a weekend shortly.. what exactly is there to do in Palmy?

Those I'm going to be staying with tell me not much! Surely there must be something to entertain myself, I'm coming up for a weekend in a couple of weeks, to see if its' worth moving there, as my partner has a decent job opportunity.. but she'll be working the whole time. I'm told rent is pretty damn cheap? Whats' the crime rate like?

And I'm also told your late night is Friday, and hardly anything is open on a Sunday? What kind of 1960's crap is that?

Cheers..

Haha stop whinging :P

Yeah rent here is pretty cheap depending on where you go, keep out of Highbury (although there are some ok highbury places now).

As far as entertainment goes, what weekend are you here? Have a check on http://www.manfeild.co.nz/ to see if theres anything good happening (The track is about 15mins away from here).

Otherwise there are a few pubs / clubs to go to, a few scenic roads to drive and I'm sure there are heaps more things to do if you have a look around.

Haha, nice. I didn't realise Manfield was so close? I'm still deciding wether or not to hire a car for a day, to have a look round.. but Manfield sounds like the go!

Whats' the problem with Highbury? Dodgy area? I may even look at buying a house if they're as cheap as people say! Whats' a good area to go for?

Highbury used to be full of Mongrel Mob, its nowhere near as bad as it used to be. Crime here isnt too bad, not many cars go walkies.
Manfeild is all of 15 minutes away :D
Hokowhitu is the poncy area of town, and the prices reflect that...there arent many really bad areas.

If u dont mind people staring as you drive past then palmy should be all good.

Everyone town has its dodgy area. Takaro/Highbury is it due to state housing etc.

I reckon crime rate is pretty high in palmy. Lots of fights on friday and staurday nights. A cop was telling me there is at least 1 stabbing per weekend

Meh. I dont find it bad. Paihitua Track close by, Manfield, Daytona, Wellington, Taupo, Beach, Paintball, I-Cafes, Pubs, Viniger Hill, River, Hunting, Street light racing, Illegal Drags... List goes on. Depends what your into.

People complain there is nothing to do in palmy but it is what you make of it. Theres heaps to do but you just gotta get of your arse and do something.

Having only been living here 4 months I have to say apart from the totally random driving (not stopping at intersections, the need to race everyone, no indication) its actually very good.

Theres great thingslike long straight back roads, ten pin bowling, long straight back roads, manfeild, long straight back roads, speedway, long straight back roads, daytona, long straight back roads, cheap tyres, long straight back roads, cheap rent ....... you get the idea

But seriously, every weekend we hear cop cars on the main roads but have had no issues where we live (terrace end) and we rent a stand alone 2 bedroom house with brand new single car garaging + workshop space and only pay $200 a week.

If you want to get phone and broadband sorted it does pay to arrange like 2 weeks before you move as there are limited contractors up here and we were without both for almost 2 weeks 8O

Life definately is a different pace up here but were loving it. And if your missus has a great employment opportunity that makes the move even easier as I am still temping 4 months after moving up here and my partner has only just got a job.

Yeah, but thats just pissed idiots in town. Crime that we care about (aka car theft  ) is fairly low.

Also Palmy has one of the higher percentages of boyracers per capita, so you're bound to get lined up at the lights alot

Haha dude I just made the shift from Chch to here and uhhh, yeah, it's different eh.

Sucks not being able to go out and grab a good feed at like 2am, there is places but only crummy fish and chip shops. That's probably my main gripe about coming here, house prices are still reasonable however, and it's a damn easy place to get around.

How does it differ from Chch? Slower/faster pace? Ethnic makeup?

In all honesty I probably like Palmy the least out of all the places I've lived (Dunedin briefly, Christchurch breifly, Wellington, Kapiti, Palmy, Auckland, Fiji). I don't know if its just the house but it's always so damp here - Our house is full of mould - I even found mould growing on my pillow under the pillowcase 8O (and no we don't shut the house up and fill it with steam) and the weather leaves a lot to be desired - sure there are some nice days in summer but it doesn't last all that long and I'm not usually here for it :( . Mind you, if that doesn't bother you it's not overly bad, as others have said - it's cheap to live, relatively easy to get round, and there are things to do if you go looking.

Sucks not being able to go out and grab a good feed at like 2am, there is places but only crummy fish and chip shops.

You been to the one down Main St that's open till like 2/3am? Their burgers are mean, especially when feeling a tad intoxicated :)

Oh and there's usually a lot of students out on Thursdays - well that was the case a couple of years ago - i don't get out all that much 8)

Slower place. Much less Asians. Probably less Maori and Islanders as well, don't get the agro in the inner city like you seem to in Chch on a weekend night.

I was born in Palmy and im ashamed to admit that it was my ancestors that founded the bloody place. Its cold, seemingly always overcast, there are too many try hard gansta boy racers in town and every one of my cousins have had their cars broken in to/had bricks thrown at their cars. I'm glad i got out of there when i was 8 :) Comming up every weekend for a long distance relationship a couple years back drove me batty!

You cant argue with the cheap rent/lively nightlife though

Amen!

I like the way how palmy is, still has everything but not as hectic as the bigger cities. Like what others have said it's what you make of it. I guess family and friends play a big part aswell.
