Running in a 4age, things to do when swapping in a new motor

Postby mr pad » Wed Jul 19, 2006 6:38 pm

Getting a rebuilt 4age for the corolla (ae82). Standard bluetop.

Engine in it seems to have dropped a valve. What are some things to look for/replace when swapping in a rebuilt motor? New motor already has new cambelt/seals etc.

What sort of oil is best for running in a new motor? How long should it be in there for? I have heard things like, use basic mineral oil for a couple of hundred kays, replace with more mineral oil for another 1000 or so kms, then do another oil change with semi-synth? That sound about right?

Was also going to do coolant, clutch (putting in a new oem clutch), gearbox oil as well...

Cheers in advance.

hey

there is "run in oil" i havent tried it, but that may be something to look into.

You might want to look at getting the engine run in on a dyno, the first 30mins is the most important..

thats what ill be doin when the 7m is done.

hope this gives you something to think about

Cheers, will look into that running in oil.

Dont think ill go down the dyno path, due to lack of $$$$. Read a good article on the web about running in a motorbike motor. Will probably follow similar guidelines for a 4age...

Do a search.
Not long ago I asked the same question... It was a very very long topic...
But there was lots of interesting points of views, and lots of good suggestions.

Cool thanks. I did read that but couldnt find it. Did an author search though 8)

In case anyone wants to read it.

One question that wasn't answered though, running in oils... Are they needed ? Any good? Opinions etc please.

Will probably crank without plugs, start up, rev up and down for 10min or so, take for quick drive, change oil, change oil again at 500kms, and again at 1000, then switch to semi-synth after that. BUDA BING.

A mineral oil of the recommended viscocity would be fine for the run in.
Don't use any synthetic or semi synthetic oil.
The oil is less critical than the first hour of engine running.
When you first start it up, quickly check for oil and water leaks then start driving. I'm not sure how revving the engine with no load on it would help.

You often read in car manuals "for the first xxxxkm avoid driving at constant speeds" - this is because if you are driving at say 90kph you will only using about 20 or 30hp. The combustion pressure wouldn't be enough to push the rings hard against the side of the cylinder to ensure they bed in correctly.
You don't want the revs too high as a lot of heat is generated as the rings bed in.
Maybe find some hilly roads - full throttle at medium revs up a hill, foot off the gas down the other side... repeat.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
