my s14 factory limits out a 7200 im pretty sure, so i dont get ur take on "half redline" as mivecs, vtecs and vvti are meant to be 4800, that makes 9600 dont it? the factory rev range it to 8000? so a great big WTF can be aluminum stickered on my ass. id sure let a cop ping my car a 3600... or take my tacho off and theyd be piss outta luck cos my factory rev counter is broken and needle less

just put one of those jaycar revlimiter things set to 4000rpm... most of new cars have idle rev limiter set to that value anyway.

yea just bump rpm limiter down, how can they make you change it... ? its your freedom, In saying that I know my exhuast will fail but ill put a superturbo muffler onit... and at a 95db setting itd prolly still fail>?

Yeah thing is though, sitting on the limiter will probably make it louder.

I dont see the issue here really, its not like they're going to test you at every WOF...and provided you dont drive round town like a cock, you're not gonna get hassled by cops.

I think the problem is brad, were worried about them abusing the power, im sure they will unfortunately, but lucky for most of us, we have "project cars" that never get drivin anyways!

if they think its too loud, you get it tested. once. and 95db is quite a high limit. especially when you consider its tested unloaded.....

How can they abuse it?

What we are talking about is stopping the annoying people racing around at night annoying others.

To abuse it, they sit there, and pick every single car that looks like its modified, and then do their thang, then that person has to pay to go get it tested somewhere else, its not like they test it on the spot, sweet, sticker, it can easily be abused. Where does the fee go to, and can they still pinky us when they decide it needs to be tested, and will they give us a fine anywhos? Theres no sticker that says it is too loud and its illegal, so no sticker still should give the benefit of the doubt?

Another interesting point is induction noise. I had a lengthy conversation with my Dad who is a WOF tester about exhaust system noise vs. induction noise. My induction noise on the race car (road legal) is 105dB at full Mivec is certainly excessive, but the exhaust noise is 94dB. The induction still creates an annoying abrasive sound and can generate a huge nuisance to all and sundry. When my car is at full noise it’s the induction, not the exhaust that is the issue. Now my question is, will the average police officer be able to discern the difference or will I just be thrown into the basket with the rest of the population? I don’t think they will have the knowledge to make an educated decision.

As soon as this law's well established it won't be long before induction noise and non-plumb-back bov's are regulated also. Australia's been like that for ages. In fact pretty soon there'll be no advantages to owning a modified car in NZ. Australia here I come.

well my loudest noise on my 165 is the compressor stall, so how can they regulate that? it only happens on light load/medium boost..

shouldnt we be slightly happy that at least now we have a set limit to stay under and set of guidelines to follow?

it is mainly targeted at the people who take the piss anyway, and sure theres going be the odd few police who abuse the rule , most likely at the very start theyll do a few sting operations and nail as many as possible. but once you've got your tag saying it complies then there shouldnt be any further problems unless you're acting like an idot anyways.

on a side note , does this mean the next cool trend is going to be to make as much power as possible with as little noise? :D
will plumbed in muffled wastegates and properly engineered airboxes become the way of the future??

the problem in NZ that you can't really challenge police. Police can give you ticket say for annoyance just because just because he/she feels like it and you cannot do anything about, you can go to court but the outcome is already predetermined.

Cops can pull you for induction noise if there has been complaints about. They can pull you up for any excessive noise really, stereos and so on. Something about operating a vehicle in a something something manner.

crnkin, there was talk of those handheld ones being used for on the spot checks. If there was any doubt about how legal it was (ie, handheld test showed it was borderline legal) then you'd be required to go test it.

I'm not sure going to Aussie is the answer, they have many rules that I'm sure would frustrate most of you. Not to mention the purchase price of a Jappa over there! 8O Have a friend in Perth who bought an AW11 about a year ago and pay $12k AUD for it. It's tidy but nothing that special.

*sigh* I doubt there is much that can be done about all this law changing concerning modified cars. Something to get used to I suppose. :roll: At least we're free to bitch about. :lol:
