Cressida brakes/struts into a AE85

Postby Trls250s » Tue Aug 01, 2006 12:43 pm

From what i can see it looks like the strut towers, could slide right into and bolt up to a AE85.

Is this tru?

The cressida rotors are vented, larger diameter disc rotors and bigger calipers then the AE85.

After getting my 85 back on the road and caning it through the hillsides i relised it could REALLY use a brake upgrade (i find my wheel nuts can get hot....)

Most cressidas struts have a bigger angle between the strut and the hub.
This means that you will probably end up with positive camber (bad).
Search for struts off a corona/carina/celica (not celica XX or celica supra) and these SHOULD have a smaller angle and so your camber should be OK.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I saw the struts with discs and calipers on trademe (but they sold).

I only really want to upgrade the brakes on my trueno, so take the vented rotors and calipers off the cressida struts and fit them to mine. But i was unsure if the calipers would sit on the same mounts on the struts or not?

How many cars have bigger rotors then a AE85 (exluding the 86 of course) and would be built into the struts that i could swap onto my car.

Im going to investigate into corona, carina and cressidas a bit more and see if i can find a suitable solution.

Any help would be great.

Probably the best approach to take if you don't want to risk messing your geometry up is pick a disc from the DBA catalogue that looks like a good fit and then get a caliper bracket made for a matching caliper (a hub centric ring for the disc is a good idea too). Personally I would go for a R32 Skyline 4 pot caliper and 280mm disc or even R33 296mm discs. What you select will depend on wheel size etc though. There is a heap of info on this type of swap on http://www.toymods.net/forums/so have a look there.
In fact, here is a thread on it -

use celica struts with a ke30 or tt141 corona lower arm to correct the camber

you will need to use the celica steering arm as well

i have a set laying around under the house, with no pads or springs (have to use ae85 spring and top hat anyway) and probably with discs that need a machine if your interested

they are 10inch vented

yes i am quite interested, howmuch? Would the springs from my 85 transfer over?

They are Jamex Progressive rate lowering springs (and i must say the best thing ive brought for my car this far)

And cheers callum, ill look into that as well.
85's definately need the brake upgrade just to make things more enjoyable, next will be a 4age but that will be in the distant future for now.

I brought my springs off a dude in dunedin round your parts, said it came off a ae85.9 coupe... just like you say yours is.

Wouldnt be suprised if these were your old springs.

But yea if you have them, and how much your willing to sell them for would be great.

What brakes are you running in yours?
