Calling any fibreglass gurus

Post by flying_wedge »

Anybody out there got the skills, expertise and product to give me a hand with some holes in a rear spoiler?

Will need quite a bit of filler, as the holes are quite big. I would have used bog, but was recommended to use proper fibreglass stuff, but I haven't the know

Will reimburse for resources and your taste of beer :P

There's a boat place down blenheim road they sell 1 litre tins of polyester resin, catalyst and chop strand mat.

Then you just mix the resin and catalyst think it's 2%??? but i put about 5% in and was sweet, then apply to the chop strand map and leave it to dry

Haha, was wondering if you might reply kurt.

I am sure that just the strand mat would normally be right, but I had to drill out the spoiler mounting bolts, the new ones would be best to set in something.

I was looking at the Epiglass range of fillers and resins, but I would not use much to warrent buying the whole lot of hardner and resins and the likes

Will think more about the mat though

yeah I used to get 20L of resin from Ian Franklin boat builders and that was like $4/litre but they have moved and now use epoxy resin

Not sure with the chopped strand mat, worked ok for me but mine did start to crack where the middle part was cut out so maybe sand a slope around the edge of the hole then try get the mat to adhere to more of the spoiler

Might pay to get some weave stuff it's good for applying to the top of the chop strand mat to get a smooth finish, if you go down to that boat place on blehneim rd i'm pretty sure that have a few different kinds of mat and weave in there to check out
