Buy the M3 if you're a fan of frequent and expensive maintenance (the S14 is effectively a race motor), plus they're ALL left hand drive as well (there are RHD converted ones out there, but feck all).

It's cheap because I'm pretty sure it cannot be registered, so your effectively stuck with a competition use only car. The link isn't an M3 Evo either. You're looking at ridiculous dollars for an Evo, given they've got the 2.5 engine and they made fewer.

I'd go with the 968 if it's within budget, it's a refined 924/944 and by all accounts a brilliant drivers car.

plus i know you, youll want to fil it full of sound gear!
so dont ruin an M3 like that :P

968.... bit of an orphan.

944 so underrated. but maybe a 928 will suit you.

howeve ALL of the cars you ahve suggested will COST if they start having issues.

how about a jag XJ12?

m5 for the win.
m3s are the 'little brother' of the m cars. 5ers have lways been alot better car for your money...
alot less conspicuous to the general n00b too.....

e36 m3 though, are damn cheap for what you're getting. then again, their value's still on the way down....
m coupe could be a go-er. they're damn hot.

failing that
Get an integrale

Its ok, there aren't any Vauxhall mechanical parts left and the advert doesn't even mention the base car it once was. You can always just say it really is a Merc.

perhaps not, but you wont get anything decent m3 wise for 20k either, will you  starting bod for a registerable e30 m3 in anything resembling good condition is about 35-40k. I know of one mint example which wouldn't be thought of being sold for less than 55k. e30s are rust traps which reflects in alot of examples. All pre-facelifts will have rust somewhere....

m5s aren't *much* off 20k anywho. e34s are reasonably common.
there was a mint e28 a wee while ago for $25k, plus with a minimum of 286bhp they're an awesome car.

ah your one of those ppl that think M5 is a common model......

fyi there is only 3 models of M5 built. the mid 80s ones, the V8 from about 5 years ago and the new V10

the others are M enhanced 5 series, NOT real M5s

untrue.

the first 'm5' was the e12 m535i. sure, only sporting an m30 single cammer, this was still regarded as the first of the m5s. kinda how the vr4 rs is named 'evo 0'

secondly, 1986 brought the e28 m5, the first 'true' m5, released even before the e30 m3. 286bhp, DOHC 6.

3rd, e34 m5. few variants of this, 3.5 and 3.8 litre etc etc. funnily enough they didn't take on the m60, or a 'motorsport' variant on this.

4th, e39 m5, first m5 that went outside the 'big 6'

5th - current v10 model. e60? the designation escapes me right now.

also the variants of 6s and, the very rare, 745s from sth africa which were powered by a motorsport dohc 6 (745s from everywhere else were 3.5l turbo).

so unofficially 5, official m cars - 4.
there's the non-m m535s and whatnot which are alot more common.

m5s are anything but 'common', but with the same token - they're alot of car for the money

OK, so besides the fact they are noisy and cramped (they're a sports car, what were you expecting), does anyone have anything against the 944's? Considering the interior would probably be entirely redone, the only downside i know of (dated interior) wouldnt be so much of an issue...

968 specs nice but i think i'd only get a dunger for $20k :(

Can you even get dunger 968 porkers in NZ? Not enough of a market.

Frankly for $20k you are best looking at a 924/944. Enough autos round in shite gold paint and checked seats that need modding.

I would love a M3/Integrale/SZ/968 turbo but our frontal impact laws now make it impossible for another 5 - 10 years. You can get 16v integrales here for $8000 but you can't register for the rooad, very sad.

V12 jags are too slow. My ST165 left them standing. Not to mentionthe maintenance and petrol costs...
