and any 3sgte you can get to make 600hp cozmo...

sr's are not over-rated. did one of your mates tell you that? they are wicked tough motors from factory, and are reliable as piss as long as you dont let your oil turn to sludge. So its not a toyota motor... omg. your going to hell etc...

Do you not undertand the term classic, the reasoning for not putting a sr20det into a ta22 is not mainly based on the fact that the sr20det is heavly overrated is more due to the fact that the ta22 is a classic toyota and should not be ruined buy putting a nissan motor between its front struts

its like buying a cosworth 190e and pulling the cosowrth motor to replace it with a 13b

thats my point a classic toyota needs a toyota engine of great heritage

here comes the 3sgte, great rally heritage i belive a few wrc world championships to :P

the sr20 will never ever be right in a ta22 imo

Mr Revhead, hehe he's lving up in tauranga now and the celica still in nelson i've seen his stock pile of parts so should be all good once he gets it up here and starts work on it again, i give him 15 years :P

I saw a rwd 1S Corona out at the Waimak a few weeks ago, had been kicked in pretty bad, had a 5spd gearbox though.. isn't that what you want? A W gearbox with an S bellhousing? Take a toolkit out on a Sunday arvo, get a free gearbox, otherwise I've seen a couple at wreckers.

If they're such "rubbish", then why did they start making them in 1986, up until a couple of years ago, without really changing the basic design? They're everywhere! Drifters, track racers, street cars, drag cars.. if they're so cheap and nasty as you say, then why would everybody have them?

its an old toyota, you are putting a new motor in it. If I shaved off the toyota on the cam covers, and the same with the nissans, would you still care? If so, then congrats. You are smart.

i would say putting any modern 2litre turbo in that car is ruining it, no matter who made it

i do have to say i've seen more 3S fail than SR and i know a lot more people with SR's. mine only died cos i cooked it to bits :P
but i wont get into the 3S vs SR battle cos i'm biased too

imo, the best motor for the application to keep with the earn turly would eiather be a 3tgte or a really worked 2tg with 45mil webbers, huge cams, all lightend and balanced, ohhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhh

Not baggin ur ride man, i've actually got a soft spot for the 180s, but the reason the SR's are so popular and have been such a success is BECAUSE they're cheap (the current high price for a rwd sr20 engine/box is only because of the drift scene). Nissan designed a very economical engine in the SR, slap a decent turbo on it and whaddaya know they seem to go pretty well too, but technically speaking, they're a fairly unimpressive setup. If Nissan wanted a technically superior engine they would've been better to build on the CA engines, but that wasn't what they wanted.

So now we have established the 3S is the superior engine, thats plus 1 for the 3S, then there's the fact that, like Justin said, you just cant do that to a car as iconic and historically cool as a TA22.

The person in question has already put a fairly high hp sr20 in a HiAce van as his last project, this wasn't so bad, i mean, its a hiace - who cares.

But not a TA22!!! ahaa 5pm now the argument should really start swinging :)

Dude, we're not trying to get an entire setup for a grand here, this is a big budget build and he's got access to all the gear to do the custom fab stuff. Starion shit belongs in a starion, thank god there are $&#$% all of them on the road these days.

LOL love this thread, yea I got a couple of these old celicas both with 3s in. One in neslon and another in Auckland,(hi juston and Worick, hope i can live up to the reputation you guys are building for me :p, hows it going. and nar my plans arent that long term, should have the Ra28 going by the end of the year, lol fingers crossed).
Its just a nice thing to do. If the guy has had the expereance putting a sr into every thing but the kitchen sink, then its high time he had a go at expanding his skill base. To to mention the fun of taking something good like a 3s and turn it into something better,aka.. a rear wheel drive 3s :)
sure there is a bit more work in it but you got to count the RESPECT Ull get from the job too.

And of couse he will already understand the large amount of $$$ thats going to go into any high hp setup so why not do it right.
There is enough aftermarket ecu setups around to be able to chuck the back of the dizzy away and not need to cut the firewall. so no problam there.

Whats with all this SR hating???

They're a good engine!! They really go the distance, just like the 3S. The only real major downfall is the oil squirters over the cams being too small.
They're fine if you service them every 10,000kms, but most of us would do it in almost half that anyway!

I've seen the results of an over-due service (By 20,000kms) and the cam lobes were rough as sandpaper, due to the oil feeds being blocked and starving them of oil.

If you ask me, the 3S and the SR are on par with each other, in terms of reliability and of power output (Well, in turbo models. Toyota put a bit more effort in the N/A catagory)

Man.... Whats with all the haters. Toyota and Nissan are brothers in arms!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I vote for a 3T-GTE. Stick with something old and Toyota, can still get a bit of go out of them
