Has it just been rebuilt? I would recommend a running in oil, it's usually a non friction modified 20W50 oil. Otherwise I would just use a cheap 20W50 or 20W40 oil, as it shoud get replaced within the first 1000kms (or preferably less).

Once the engine has properly been run in (usually after 2000km) then use a decent oil.

Valvoline XLD Engine armour is 15W40 semi-synthetic with a API SM rating. It comes in a 5L (or sometimes 6L) bottle and is a pretty decent oil for the price - I run it in my cars myself.

yes, its just been rebuilt all new seals and gaskets and rings i was told not to use running in oil as it will damage my old turbo????,so i just went with cheap valveoline all climate ive done 300km total so far and i noticed the oil needs a top up so figured i just dump tha all climate and go with the xld from 300kms on??

any advice welcome

I dont think the engine armour is turbo rated. Castrol GTX Protec would better suit a turbo engine. Lots of guys use it in their N/A 4AG's with good results including myself. Even FORD recomend it in the XR6 Turbo & they're pretty anal about what oil they use.

I wouldn't be too anal about the oil being turbo rated or not, the CT26 is watercooled, which according to Corky Bell, the core is approx 300 degree C, weather the oil cooled turbos are 450ish, and that's with hard boosting, if you're running in you shouldn't reach such temps. Should be able to get away with lower grade oil, which has the properties that you're after.

The Valvoline XLD meets API specification SM, as does Castrol GTX Protec.

I think the castrol range is a bit over rated and definitely over priced. $30 gets you 4L of 15W40 Castrol GTX which is full mineral oil, although it does meet API SM. XLD Engine armour is 5L of semi-synthetic which also meets SM, for the same price (under $30 anyway).
