4k gone bang?

Postby Mike- » Fri Aug 25, 2006 9:30 pm

ive got a kp61 starlet with a 4k and k50.

i think i gave it to much death and blew the head gasket because the temp gauge was up at the 'H'

tried to take it for a drive 2 weeks later and it felt like it had no power at all
.
i opened up the bonnet and saw one of the HT leads was not connected, then took the rocker cover off and one of the rods that sits under the tapit on the opposite side of the spring was loose, (not under the tapit).

then i took the head off and that cylinder was full of water.

also on the left handside of the block ( when looking from the front of the car) down those little holes there is a bearing looking thing for each cylinder, 3 looks oily and 1 was steel with a little oil on it.

all the stuff i mentioned was for the first cylinder from the front of the car.

will this engine be salvageable?

if so what needs fixing,

and the bit i mentioned about the bearing not looking very oily, is this a problem because i have a spare block that looks like this too.

Any help appreciated

Those bearing looking things sound to me like you're describing the frost plugs, if so thats no drama.
Whack a new headgasket in it, make sure the head isnt warped, and bolt it all back together. Its a 4K, they're tough little bastards

I think your looking down to where your push rods sit. Also the loose rod you were talking about should problably have a little play. They have to gaped properly but you have to set up to Top dead center etc etc.

And 4 K gone bang?? Its a great feat if youve managed to kill it! :)

Yeah, you can't kill a 4K.. believe me, many have tried and failed!

Down those holes, are the cam followers. I'd just replace the headgasket, throw it back together and keep on truckin'! I know a guy who had a 4K Starlet racecar, busted his sump, ran it outta oil, and seized the motor. He took it back to the pits, ran oil down the cylinders, bogged up the sump, threw it back together, filled it with gearbox oil, fired it up, and ran all races in the afternoon. :) AND its' still going as a paddock car!

one of the pushrods was just sitting there serving no useful purpose, the ht lead for that cylinder was also disconnected, definitely running on 3 cylinders, drove it for a few k like that, would this do damage??
