My first speeding fine...

Postby Jazza » Mon Sep 04, 2006 9:58 pm

Ok, so it starts when im driving past a school, doing 50-55ish as you do. I get about 1km from the school and getting up to a hill so i accelerate more to the 55 mark and i hear a siren, i look behind and Bam! Cop. So i wait for the next place i can pull over (As the road was parked out) and stop. He comes up to the car and says his jazz. And tells me im speeding. I ask him what speed i was doing as i thought it was BS.

I received a fine, and demerit points...

For doing 56km, in an area where the maximum tolerated speed limit was 55., not to mention it occured at 4.30 pm, well beyond school hours.

$30 fine (rediculously low, but im not complaining)... woulda cost more for the nazi ass cop to follow me... seriously...

They tell us our police are doing a good job? All these morons driving round on cut springs etc and i get pulled over for doing 1 km over the speed limit?

[/end rant]

I say fair enough.. you were speeding. the ticketable threshold is 1 over the limit. I reckon the ticketing is more revenue collecting than making people drive to the safer speeds but people are being injured/killed from speeders.

I think you will have a different perspective on speeders if your 5 yearold was killed by a driver going as fast as you were.

I dont disagree with the fine. I disagree with the fact i get a ticket for doing the same speed as everyone else (Yes, i was speeding, but i wasnt doing a dangerous speed) and cops are sitting there with radars waiting for someone doing a tiny bit too fast (You dont even fail you license the first time you hit 55 km's an hour while taking the test) as opposed to going and busting up the queen street clog up on friday nights with every homie and his dawg out for a run in their trash mobile...

Was more of a vent... but even so, our police system does need better priorities..

your lucky it wasn't in an reduced speed school zone. 56km/h past a few of our schools is 16 over the limit.

Hey, this is flucked up I agree.
How many demerit points is that?
Maybe I should start organized crime in NZ to keep the cops busy, as they have nothing better to do....
56km is way below of accuracy of tyre size/speedo drive/speedo needle..
DO a little experiment, set seat a little closer to steering wheel than usual and right up, and see where you see the needle pointing (whilse stationary 0 will suffice), and repeat the experiment with seat little bit further and down, I'm sure you will get ~5km discrepency (in first example it will read below 0 and second above 0)... so will do moving your head left to right.

Speedo whatching kills.

Driving to slow also kills as it pisses right off other drivers and they start doing stupid things.

hahah there is enough crime in auckland to keep all the police in NZ busy.. the thing is they're 'under-staffed'

If they were more efficient with the way its operated then his will be a much better place!

One thread has a rant saying police should stop targeting speeders and target boy racers, another thread says stop targeting boy racers and target speeders. we cant have it both ways people

No offence ment jazza, i have been dealt the exact same deal as you, 56k in a school zone, found it a bit unfair, but would prefer that over hitting a 6 year old on their way home.

Settle down people, keep it nice.

well what is the difference between 50 and 56? Yes I understand that if speed is increase twice energy increases four times.
But in this case speed is not increased twice.
Don't forget that there is reaction time of about 0.2-0.3 seconds before you can apply brakes, that is saying that you already have foot on the brake.
I would say realisticly it takes about 0.5s to apply brakes considering that most of the time foot sits on the accelerator.

56kph is ~15.6m/s ~ 7.8meters gone before the brakes are even applied.
50kph is ~13.9m/s ~ 7.0meters gone before the brakes are even applied.

If some one jumps in front of the car at distance ~10-15m there is no way it is possible to stop. 15 meters is over 3 car length.

The only logical exit is to steer out of the danger.
When you are steering the speed is somewhat irrelevant (in this case the difference in speed is very minimal to affect an outcome).

In fact you can kill some one at 30kph.

It does not mean that speed limit should lowered.

If people would follow this logic, then forks, knives, lighters, matches, gas , power tools, and whole civilization would be banned becuase it can kill.

I like how back your arguments up with facts, you can't bullshit the numbers!

I stopped counting fines when they got up around $5000. Stupid I know, but I got most of those in my late teens. I've had about 2 tickets in the last 3-4 years, one a speed camera. Judging by this, I'm all for raising the age at which you can get a licence!

And I'm for driving education.
Most of people driving in NZ don't know what to do in emergency.
These sort of things should be tested before getting licence.
Put the car on the rolers (so they will rase slightly the car lifting weight of the tires resulting in very little traction) and do correcting manouvres under safe speeds to get the driver understanding how the car behaves when it looses grip. Fail the slow and uncofident drivers. Fail the overconfident drivers.
Teach drivers how to deal with road rage. Teach drivers how to use common sense.
But no, this goverment will not do such thing because they like the situation right now. Right now there is a road death count (even small) which is used to push more speeding fines, and lower the speed limits to get more fines, more fines = more $$$. They claim that their system is working, but infact people are driving safer cars, hence the drop in death count. Their campain has nothing to do with safety.

As I stated prevoisly speedo watching kills, with these sort of low tolerances, the drivers are forced to check speedo more often, this speedo watching takes off their concentration off suroinding, also it while they look on the speedo there is a chance that thay will miss their 30 meter oprtunity to stop.
calculation: 1sec to watch speedo @ 50kph = 13.9m + ~0.2sec to refocus back on the road, 0.1sec to realise that something is going on, then 0.5s to apply brakes, 20meters necesarry to stop, amd you will overshoot the target by ~15meters.
People are capable at driving at very high speed because they predict what is going to happen, and when things happen they have room for error, speedo watching takes off that room.
Good example is motorway driving vs city driving:
motorway driving is much more relaxed even the speeds are much higher than city driving because every one moves in same direction with relative speed to each other very low, there is room for error as people tend to keep longer distance and there are no sudden stops.
City driving is potentially more hazardous due to the fact every one is changing direction, there are traffic lights, people crossing road, much less room for stopping, traffic queues, cars pulling from drive ways, etc. and the lower speed limit does not help. If for example city council will lower speed limit to 30kph, this will result in traffic queues, yo-yo driving, more polution, more noise polution, higher crash rate (front to rear type), and pissed off drivers. If people will get used to this driving when they get out on open road they will tend to keep smaller distances between cars, will have no idea of the speed they doing, and that at this speed car steer and brakes completely different which will result in higher death toll.
