the NZ government is too PC to allow something as extreme as the death penalty to be re-introduced. Considering that a lot of crime is not exactly penalised to a greater extent and the penalties are rather lame anyway, i'd say that harsher punishment shuold be considered (as long as human rights violations are conveniently ignored for the harsher punishments..)

I havent read all the babble in this thread but there are countries where it is proven that harsh penalties work..

other than NZ where you get a ankle bracelet after you kill some one, in Dubai the penalty for stealing is the loss of a hand - guess its so they wont be able to do it again.

Maybe if you get done for something like rape they should be the loss of their diddle

Have prison cells set up with a dirt floor, 2 prisoners per cell, give them a shovel each, Tell one that by the end of the day they better have dug a big hole in the ground, and tell the other that the ground better not have a hole in it, the one who succeeds is the one who gets fed bread and water for the day.
Wont be long before one kills the other with the shovel anyway... Government doesnt have any official association with dead inmates, we dont have to pay as much to keep them in jail.

But all this P.C bullshit about breaching prisioners rights pisses me off... They wouldnt be there without taking away the rights of someone else, so that should make them exempt from having rights of their own..
