I recently failed my wof. Because of play in the front wheel.The bearing is very noisy :oops:

.Can I just get a replacement wheelbearing pressed in??.If so, then how do i go about getting the hub off? There is a metal Dust/Grease cap in the middle of the hub with a 8mm threaded hole in it .I wound a big cap screw in there as tight as i could but the cap didnt budge!. do i even need to take this cap off or is it a complete unit?thanks for any info

not so long ago I had the samething on the Corona, had to order the whole front hub as Toyota dont do a seperate part for the bearing, would assume its the same for yours.

will have to remove calliper, front disc, large nut with split pin that holds the hub on, then replace with new hub & bearing, tighten nut, insert slipt pin put disc & caliper back on and ya should be done

thanks dude! . so how do i get to the large nut with a split pin(from what toyta said it is a press fit bearing) .I cant get the grease cap off!?.
should i just keep winding the long 8mm bolt into the middle through center hole?

tried using a flat blade screw driver?

pretty sure thats what we did with mine. Actually I cant even remember if it had a cap like that, but a flat blade should do it, just be gentle'ish so you dont wreck the thing

Do i use a pulley extractor? Is this the correct method if so i will go and borrow one

sorry put you wrong about having to get the hub & bearing as one :oops:

you can get these seperately, the bearing is a pressed fit. Majority of the time if your front wheel bearing needs replacement i.e. play you will find it has spun on the inside of the hub & just putting a new bearing in there wont fix it as you will still have some play, hence why we got both bearing & hub as new.

from memory once the retaining nut was removed the hub just pulled off, either that or a gentle tap with a soft faced hammer from behind

just dust cap, should pop off with some persuasion

some models have a habit of rooting the hub if the bearing goes. sw20 isnt really one of those, st183 celicas and st171/191 coronas are!

Don't forget to add ST16X, AE8X (which is the same bearing as ST16x), AE9x and AE10x-11x.. well basically all front wheel drive based toyota's

yeah they can all do it, but some worse than others
the st183s are by far the worse. run a bearing and you can almost gaurantee itll shag the hub

When I did front bearings on my 165, the hubs just fell out, I used ST18X hubs from pick-a-part, it took 4 sets to get 2 good ones out...
Same happend on my AE101...

And it always seems to be the left front wbearing that goes on toyotas. Wonder why?

it gets most pounding from potholes and such, camber of the road plays major part aswell...

well toyota say there is a nut on the back holding the hub on

my drunken mechanic rekons there is a big circ clip on the back and once you have it on the bench you have to weld something to the bearing to get it out ,

bugger it im off to toyota so they can piss me around and rheem my wallet

Yeap my front left bearing is on it's way out, need to do mine as well, so let us know how you get on.

I don't think the 18's with these Sport MAXX tires are helping the bearing situation neither.

Im in auckland boss cheers any way.Im in booked at toyota on monday! I want to supply the bearing,BUT there are two bearings listed where i get it from and they only have one type in stock, so i can possibly see my car sitting hubless at toyota for a while I finally found the hub diagram on the net and it does have a big old circ clip on the back . Im might be tempted to borrow some pliers and have another go :cry:

I priced up some Toyota genuine wheel bearings yesterday, came back at $225 each plus GST plus a seal of some description that you need to change with them, and they're worth $25 each + GST.

I'd be very interested to know what you end up paying for replacement. I'm looking at an SW20 turbo at the moment that needs both front wheel bearings replaced. My wallet hates me already.

well i managed to get m8 rates at repco/appco/partmaster on the bearing i think their cost price is like 80$ but retail is about 250$ and i got a mechanic to do it he said it was a shit of job because his press wasnt big enough an he needed a 20 tonne press in the end ,so a hammer aint gonna do it!It shouldnt take longer than 2 hours labour. now i just need to figure out what cable i need for the hand brake mine seems to have streched :?:
