Well they are dangerous, to be sure, but so is driving down the road!

To be honest, i'd rather do the rally than drive through town :D!

how is a tarmac rally more dangerous than say... a gravel rally? i mean high powered cars on slippery metal surface is safe? hell lets ban those as well.

hey look someone died in a top fuel drag race, that must be dangerous as well, tick that onto the banned list, lets include all drag racing.

F1, A1gp, Indie, Nascar all look pretty dangerous to me, to be safe lets stop those as well. good i think we're done, things looking pretty safe now...

omg! someone got run over, killed on a public road!!

Because of much higher speeds, in the same 'uncontrolled' terrain.

eg. trees to hit into, cliffs to drop down, etc

Also when you $&#$% up, it's not like an ambulence etc is right there to help you... it may be some time until anyone even knows that you've crashed.

Driving a backroad at night, 80km an hour, get a blow out, roll the car. 20 hours later someone notices. Not much difference. Either way your pretty f*cked if you crash and your stuck in the car for prolonged periods of time

I never said that caning around back roads in the middle of the night was any safer, it's probably more dangerous in fact, seeing as how you dont have the same level of safety gear.

Fixed and quoted.

If you crash into anything solid at that speed, you are dead, or perminatly $&#$% from it. Unless you are god damn lucky.

As someone that competes in Targa every year, what crap. Its no more or less dangerious than Track or Gravel Rally.

What i will say is that the Aussie Targa's are full pace noted. This means they drive harder and faster than NZ where you only get 'danger and deceptive' notes. You must driv 8/10 in NZ, where as with full notes 9/10.

Has ayone seen pre crash photos of Brocks cage ? I've heard it was pretty basic with minimal side protection.

would have to be a fairly major cage to protect in a hit like he took.

True. Apparently he wasnt very happy with the unbalanced handling of the car, which probably explains the accident. Such a shame, still cant believe it.

I had been waiting for an article or similar about the safety of tarmac rallies ever since Brock had his crash, i thought there would be a petition or something to try ban them too but thankfully i don't think that has happened.

IMO Targa rallies are one of the most exciting forms of motorsport and one day i'd love to compete in Targa NZ. 8)

Any form of motorsport is dangerous, if you don't accept the fact that it's dangerous don't compete, or don't spectate. It's an unfortuante fact but on the whole your probably safer competing in motorsport than you are sleeping in your own bed, after all how many people each year fall out of their bed whilst alseep & kill themselves & we ain't doing nothing to ban sleeping in beds or moaning about how dangerous it is are we???

I've been involved with motorsport for 25years now in various forms & I'll admit I've had some close calls & I've had some injuries(mainly cuts/burns from working on cars) but I'm prepared to accpet that they were my fault & it's all just part of what I was doing.

As for photos of Brock's car pre/post crash I've seen both & too be brutalily honest I doubt even a more substancial cage would've help much more. You only have to look at Mark Porter's V8 supercar after Friday to see how that took a side impact with what is essentially a top level cage in it. It's a great shame that Brocky's gone & my thoughts & best wishes go out to Mark & his family, I know it's not looking that good, but lets all hope he makes a recovery.

yeah, unfortunatly theres just no room in a saloon for the kind if side impact you need to stop a 1350kg car doing 150+ kmh :(

and with a tree the impact is even more concentrated :?

Any type of rallying is dangerous. Any type of racing is dangerous. You're pusing a car, albeit a hevily modified car, to its limits.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I've never heard any hard facts. Is that the quoted impact speed ?

Lots of sports are dangerous... and whenever you compete/do them you are accepting that risk. I think there are less deaths/injuries in motorsport than in a lot of other sports.

Damn tree-hugging hippies!
