On my old car I had 2 resonators and a straight thru muffler on the back. Had to have 2 resonators as I originally had one with the muffler, but when I changed the exhaust headers it developed a wicked (horrible) rattle at some revs, so I got another one. Sounded like I had a tin can rattling in there somewhere (like alot of people seem to accept as ok, $$% knows why).
The way I found which resonator to buy is I asked the exhaust place to stick one in the end of the exhaust when I moved through the rev range, gave a pretty good indication of what the sound was going to be. They then installed it, and it sounded basically the same as the test, but a bit better even.
So you dont as such need to figure out before hand what size etc you want, just jam one in your exhaust (assuming you have a single pipe out the back).
Hope that is of some help. Pretty rangi, but it worked for me.
