Looks like he will be in jail before the 6 months is up according to the fines website.

Oh right excuses. So without lying to the police, what are the right excuses?

Well, im not sure if it still applies but you can argue the fact that you werent payed enough for living costs bla bla bla and to pay the fine, and you USED to be able to put it off for forever, but as i said, i dont know if the rules have changed, and this happened to a guy i knew a long time ago

But if your trying to get out of paying a fine ontime, what is a lie or 2 to police gunna be to you anyhow?

Where is mythbusters when you need them? lol

Actually this used to work;

One of mates used it to save his ass more than once, haha.

Up until about 5 years ago or so, when they figured out what people were doing, and clamped down on it.

Which is the same as with most cool scams; by the time joe bloggs has heard about them, so have the authorities, and they've been locked down already.

Like the one about using a dead babys id to get a passport, it actually did work at some stage, but not anymore.

Simple: Pay your fines on time. Or don't incur them in the first place.

Refer http://www.fines.co.nz for further info. No need to spread further urban legends here.
