Well, im not sure if it still applies but you can argue the fact that you werent payed enough for living costs bla bla bla and to pay the fine, and you USED to be able to put it off for forever, but as i said, i dont know if the rules have changed, and this happened to a guy i knew a long time ago

But if your trying to get out of paying a fine ontime, what is a lie or 2 to police gunna be to you anyhow?

Easiest way to avoid the demerit points. Overpay for the fine, and when they post you back a cheque with the overpayed amount, dont bank it.
