Battle of the 98 octanes?

Okay, so I've always heard people insist that BP ultimate is better than the other 98 octanes available from mobil etc.

I didnt think much of it, until recently.

My car has been running like crap, and I havent really been sure why.

I just filled up with a tank of BP 98, and now it's running a shitload better!

Previously I had been running 98 from mobil, for the last.... ages.

Perhaps it's a coincidence, and something else magically fixed itself in the car?
Or perhaps it just is/was a bad batch of fuel that came through at the mobil I go to perhaps?

Either way, my car is running a whole lot better now, and it seems to be thanks to using BP 98, strangely enough.

I was just wondering if anyone else had any feedback on the matter, or any similar issues!

According to my PowerFC, there's no noticable difference between the 2 :/

Well I'm not ruling out the possibility that it was thanks to some other variable that has changed, but it seemed to coincide with a change in petrol station!

No it's definitely not a placebo effect.

Low rpm and partial throttle are MUCH better now.

When at WOT, it sounds different too.

I'm not basing this on "Teh arse dyno tells meh dat teh car is fastah", so much as an audible difference in engine sound, and much smoother running. (I knew it wasnt running right, but assumed it was thanks to something else.)

It's quite possible that I went over a bump, and a faulty engine sensor started working again or something, haha.

I didnt start using the BP fuel for the sake of hoping it was better, I just happened to need gas at the time, and BP was the closest.

I didnt have any expectations of it being any different, as I've switched between the two previously, more than once. which is why I was so surprised that it seemed better.

Maybe I'm a retard, and accidentally filled it with 91 or something previously, I dont know!

Realistically any difference should be minimal, though I've always FELT I've liked Mobil better. The only time I've had a dodge knock count has been with Ultimate in it - though that could have been bad luck.

We need Optimax.

It's a little dependant on batch as well. Sometimes 98 will leave the refinery at 103 so they'll mix it with some 91-ish fuel to try and balance it out but it's not the most exact science in such large quantities (millions of litres).

the 98 rating is supposed to be a minimum, I've had knock in Alycia's bzg on bp 98 but mostly it goes great so it does vary a few points here and there which makes all the difference.

random comment : My Starlet got pre-ignition like a son of a bitch the one tank of Caltex 91 I ran in it (compared to my usual choice of BP 91 octane).

maybe the fore court guy stole your air filter

maybe different bp additives cleaned a little bit more from a dirty injector

take a sample of each to ESR and get them to examine it

actually, thats a good idea for a forth year project

you sure it wasnt caltex? apparently they have these little dudes who clean the inside of your engine weird

but on i side note, yea i prefer bp

Well, actually on the pump on Mobil states minimum 97.5 octane, while on BP states minimum 98 octane.

I always use BP Ultimate in my car, and as soon as i pulled out of the petrol station after putting 98 in for the first time (from 96 octane) i immediately noticed a difference.

Throttle response seemed quicker and there seemed to be less delay to things. Fuel economy didn't (seemingly) improve or worsen although i think it got a little better.

Because i've always like BP (even when i wasn't yet attending intermediate school) i will be sticking with them.

Filled my tank with 98 from mobil when i first got the car, got bad carbon build up, switched to 98 from BP cos i was told the car should be running on 96 or higher and it was fine... i dont got anywhere else now

Interestingly, my MR2 was the opposite, it was much happier with Mobil 98. Back before there was 98, my RX7 used to go better with BP 96, and felt very flat on Shell.

Yeah - I seem to notice better fuel economy from BP ultimate. When you're running 740cc injectors and a nismo pump - believe me - every bit counts!

My strategy - always tank up at busy sites to avoid sh1tty old fuel and if possible - aim for the most frequented pumps too.

Yeah, I found out the hard way, used 1/2 a tank trying to find a 98 station a month or 2 ago up there (well maybe a little exaggeration)

I run my 20V on 98, just seems to have better economy and response, I refuse to support mobil cos they sold me a bad batch of oil once apon a time and they are the company that says when fuel goes up: "we raised our price to match the others to be more competitive"

FXGT runs fine on Shell 95 cos I get Flybuys
