My blown clutch! with pics!

Postby Quint » Sun Nov 12, 2006 10:50 pm

Was half way home from hamilton to whangarei, i could smell the clutch slipping but there was sweet F-all i could do about it, so i kept plodding along as usual untill i didn't seem to be getting any go out of 5th, 4th wasn't really happy either 3rd was the same story and i didn't even bother with the first two gears :p.

So was stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere for 3hrs waiting for a tow to arrive, took me 7 hours to get from auckland to whangarei, some kind of record ;)

Today i pulled out the gearbox (did it in a lil over an hour, go me) at first i couldn't figure out why it had died...

Then, upon further investigation!

Image

Clutch plate el-explodo!

Thought it had done its nanna after it suddenly gave out, and the fact that when i took out the started motor i got kevlar in my hair >_<

Image

P/P and Flywheel have a nice glazing on them.

Figured it was leaking cause of the input seal from the gbox leaking onto the plate and then causing it to slip alot, causeing it to heat up and it eventually got to a temp when it just came apart !!

Now i have to take the gbox apart and replace the seals, will most likely do the bearings and swap the 5th and 4th syncros for the 2nd and 3rd ones (if they fit).

Anyone have any experiance pulling the W5* series apart? Or should i just take it to a specialist?

I had a similar thing happen except mine wasn't slipping but was making a tack tack tack sound all the time so I stopped driving it, when the starion went in for the rebuild he checked the clutch out and all the riverts had popped!!!! Clutch was still in good nick but there was like nothing holding it together!!!!

sometimes you can "centrifuge" (sp?) them apart, like hooking second instead of fourth when going 100+km/h then putting the clutch in and getting 12k+rpm on just the clutch

Am thinking about going to a paddle clutch, but have no idea what type of setup i want to go for, as my supra is my daily driver, also want to beef up the P/P and get some decent clamping pressure happening.

Anyone got suggestions :D

Thats the kind of thing i was thinking about ~3000lb P/P and a 4 puck clutch. What type of price range am i looking at for a 9" clutch assembly?

Hopefully someone in Whangarei can source me something, will check out prices tommorow. Hopefully wont push up more than 500!

Anyone here able to do me a deal? :D

Where abouts in whangarei are you?? Have a talk to Michael "Bung" Heape of AE86 D-Corp fame at autoworks in tiki by the GAS station. He has a W55 in his 86 and he's just put a W57 into a soarer so he's been playing with a couple of clutch combos.
When in doubt, down and out.

I have had an autoclutch one, 4 puck ceramic with standard pressure plate, it was minto.

changed to a TRD full face with a TRD pressure plate, my god I have never came across anything as junk as that. Was riding the clutch going backwards up Wildcard's driveway, I can smell clutch all the way up.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
