2zzge noise????

Postby AE86fan » Mon Dec 11, 2006 1:56 pm

I have got a 2zzge powered Fielder that is a bit noisy when you de-accelerate. Its a bit of an odd noise almost like how you would think a noisy timing chain would sound but I think its coming from the gearbox side of the motor.

Anybody with one of these has the same thing????? Im not sure if its normal or if I should get someone from toyota to take a look.

Any ideas gladly recieved.

That aside what a great engine..... why hasnt someone put one of these in an Ae86????

Probably it is the gearbox noise you hear. It is quiet common on those. It should happen only on decceleration, if you press in the clutch it should go away. There is nothing to worry about unless it is very loud...

Thanks dude, I did wonder if it was a gearbox noise but was told it is really uncommon for gearboxes to be noisy while slowing down.

Do you know if a change of oil might help?

Unlikely, but they seem to be prone to breaking oil pump drives...might be on its way out?

This rattle happens because (my theory starts here) of pulsation from the engine while it is decelerating which transfered to gearbox and because of clearances (gear backlash) it rattles the gear pairs.

Do you mean oil pump in the engine or is there a pump in the gearbox, to be honest I have only had the car a few weeks and am still getting familar with what its got and where to find it.

No, the engine...just a thought in case you hadn't fully determined where the sound was coming from. Sergei's explanation sounds about right though.

He means oil pump in the engine. C series gearboxes don't have oil pumps.
To check if it is gearbox either press in the clutch or press lightly the gas. If noise goes away it should be the gearbox noise. If noise does not go away it is something else...

It does go away when you put your foot on the clutch, thanks sergei I think/hope you might be right and its nothing more major.

I might get some trick gearbox oil and do a change, its done 100,000Ks and its probably overdue anyway will see if that helps.
