steel wheel widening in welly area...

need to get sum steel rims widened. im in wellington but if no one in welly does it can someone tell me the closest place that will do a good job?

Don't do it.

While that may seem a really dim reply, and a very unhelpful one ... my reason is that I used to race my Mini on widened steel rims, and my Mini pulled the wheel nut seats right out of the hub. Thus seeing the wheel part company with the car, and proceed the full length of the back straight by itself. With all the wheel nuts still in place, and the seat still happily bolted to the hub.

This wasn't while running sticky tyres either, just normal old Bridgestones.

A friend of mine had a similar experience, but he caught his wheel failure before it resulted in the wheel parting company.

I realise that there are tons of widened steel wheels out there being used, personally I wouldn't go near them again after my experience.

Do the ol' welding of centres into a blank rim trick.

Buy 14x8 rims or something, and weld your centres in. Those Mark II steels are cool.

In this instance, no ... it isn't the widening that was the problem in itself, it is that the extra loading possible on the rim while cornering caused other original elements of the rim to fail.

Having been widened, and running wider tyres (thus presumably increased) the loading on the wheel nut seats, which caused them to rip out of the rim.

Basically wheel was built to take a certain amount of abuse, and this level of abuse was limited by the size of the tyres you could fit (in this instance 145!), and by widening the rim, to allow 165 tyres to be fitted. Thus level of abuse was exceeded, and rim failed.

Also worth noting, is that this car went through a wheel bearing, and a couple of ball joints every warrant. Probably an offset issue with the altered wheel.

I don't pretend to understand all the variables ... it's a bit out of my depth, but all I can go on is the symptoms. Wheel was widened, and when put under loading, this widened wheel failed, and nearly made my life very interesting.

That was a problem with Mini rims. They are weak in the middle. In the 'old' days we used to buy reverse Cooper S wheels which had the centre turned around to provide more offset. They would take any punishment.

When we ran the KE20 rally car in the 70's we ran widened standard rims without any issues. Mags were not so plentful and they were expensive then.

Changing the wheels offset or going too wide can alter what used to be called the king pin inclination and/or the scrub radius.This can put extra load on other components and make steering harder and not so positive.

The early early early Mini rims I knew had definite issues (we're talking 1959 - 1960 here though, and that was quite well documented), but I didn't think the later ones had the same problems.

Obviously your milage may vary, but one scare with a wheel failing was enough for me, especially when my friends car did the same thing

Try Rimrite in Palmy or Graeme Berry racecars, they would be able to put you on the right track at least.

go for it. you would then have 4wd

the 2255013.5 are on a factory wide rim, 7 or 8 inch. they are usually quite easy to get hold of through Blairs.

He had his mini rims widened locally.
But I'm pretty sure you CANT use widened rims in any form of motorsport. Leon should be able to confirm this...No. wait..Here. I'll confirm it.
