Some wires on the side of my 3au..

Postby AE86less » Sat Dec 23, 2006 12:11 pm

Just recently i have put a new 3au in my ae85 to get it past that new smoke restriction. Everything is in and complete except for three wires on the side of the engine. Three in one plug on the car side, and 2 different plugs on the engine side. I have no idea which wire does what and connects with which.

They are located on the passenger side of the engine, about halfway along the block behind the starter motor.

It may also be worth mentioning that the engine is not turning over, not a sound from the starter motor, but the stereo works fine 8)

are all your other dash lights working ok??
it sounds like it'll either be the power source from the battery or something to some point on your ignition, otherwise the plug for your starter motor?
or have you already connected all the starter wiring back up?

Cheers for that, i was completely stumped on working out what each did.

I havent checked all the lights on the dash but im sure that atleast some of them work.

Im staying tuned rick, thanks :D

Now all i need to find out is which wire to connect to each, the colour coding is different on each.

Its not for the starter motor, On my 3a loom the second pic the plug is not used. I dont know about the third pic I couldnt find it on my loom, it shouldnt stop the car from starting tho... On the third pic can you take a picture further back so I can see where the wires go..?

Its a pitty you are not closer as I would come around and have a look, the green plug is different to my 3a's, maybe it is the starter? only real way to tell is to test it.

A shame indeed. I was having a fiddle earlier, the wires from the 2 point plug dont appear to make any difference (i couldnt test the 1 point with 1 person, its a male plug, the same as the one on the starter).

The wires on the three point plug dont reach :?

Problem solved. The wire that was supposed to run to the starter had been cut off for reasons unknown and had ended up back inside the loom. We located it using a multi meter to test all the points on that big plug stuck on the top of the firewall to find which point had a current at the START key position. Then we traced the wire to where it had been cut off. Thank god for mates who are apprentice electricians

Cheers for the help guys, much appreciated. Have a happy new year!

Sure is. Cheers for the help!

One question though, there is a lot of play on the gearstick (about 15-20cm movement while it's in gear). I had thought it was my old gearbox but after replacing it the problem is still there. I did transfer the old gearstick over.

What could be causing this? I assume it's something to do with the stick and the rubber and crap around it but i'm at a complete loss as to what is wrong.

You will most likely find its the white bush that goes on the ball at the end of the stick if you are going to replace that you might as well replace the green ring bush that sits in the cup under the two locating dowels

I think thats the sort of thing RED TOP MR 2 meant. I don't know how similar that is to a k50. I guess i'll have to stop being lazy and relying on you guys :P

I'll go ask the local shop..

EDIT: Just out of curiosity, theres nothing to stop someone putting a t50 on a 3au is there?
