AE111 Levin Brakes

Howdy fellas,

just a reasonably simple question...

This is a 1996 AE111 Levin.

ive noticed the discs on my car lately are rather ridged and rough, not very smooth... i may put some pictures up tomorrow if needed, so i pulled off the pads, and they obviously, have worn into the same pattern the discs are in...

so my questions are these:

What would cause such a problem with discs?

Am i going to lose most of the braking power, by putting new pads on, since they wont be making 100% contact?

Whats the best thing to replace them with, factory discs/callipers? Or go for an upgrade while im looking at it, if so, whats the best, and reasonably cheap, replacement?

main things that cause the brakes and disc to wear rings is stones,heat,how hard u brake, and the defects on the pads from factory.

when u get new pads you need to get the disc's resurfaced. thats when they lathe off the rings so its a nice smooth surface again. after that they will make 100% contact again.

you wont loose braking performance from what you said. you'll only loose braking performance from glazing of the pads. thats when the surface of the pad becomes hard and smooth and wont grip onto the disc. but you'll only get that if you over heat your disc/pads. (or have really sh!t pads)

if your car is stock then you prob wont need after market brake pads. but if you want tho "green stuff" pads from endless is good for street.

Price new discs first, as you're better off with new discs than skimming your existing ones.

I found the price difference for having the rotor's skimmed to the new ones to be almost identical when I did mine.

Im due for a warrant on the 26th, and in their present state, i highly doubt theyll pass.

On a side note, is there any legal requirement for skimming the rotors? safe thickness, etc. etc.?

there is a requirement for minimum thickness, not sure on the exact number tho, i think it varies between manufacturer.

Really. skimming cost me $25 last time. If you can get S/S discs for $25 let me know.

Also Revhead just out of intrest what is the ball park figure on new dics for S/S and non S/S?

I have the same problem. I have a 1998 AE111 Levin 4AFE engine on. Whenever I was applying pressure, no matter hard or soft braking, the brakes started to make a loud metallic noise.

I went to my mechanic last October for the regular service and to check the reason why this was happening. The rotors had to be changed or machined. Since I want a more reliable and long lasting solution went straight ahead and bought a pair of new front discs.

The rotors I got are drilled from Brembo.

But I made a mistake...A friend of mine who has a BZG model assured me that both cars have the same rotor dimensions, 255x22.

Only to find out later while trying to change the rotors that mine has dimensions of 255x18. Now Im trying to find calipers from a BZG-BZR to fit my car!!!

BZR brakes won't fit your car, they have the 275mm brakes with 2 pot calipers.

You just need calipers from a FWD 4age powered car.
ae101 calipers will fit fine (again the 2 pot calipers won't)

And common sense would say that 4age power ae92/82 would have the same calipers..

Sorry but I don't seem to get why the two pot calipers won't fit. If it's possible to explain it, I'd appreciate it.

So, AE101 calipers will fit my 255x22 rotors?

Any info on where to get those calipers from?

I thought that BZRs had single pot calipers with bigger rotors.

iv never worked on them but i know 2 pot normally need a different master cyclender or proporting valve to sute them so thats probly a start

Real BZR's have superstrut suspension, with 2 pot calipers.

It is common for dealers to put bzr stickers on to bzg/bzv's just to sell them at a higher price. Thus some people are confused about what a bzr is.

The superstrut (2 pot) calipers are of a different design and its alot of effort to put them onto a non S/S car. From what I can see the master cylinders are the same, but the offset of the caliper mounts is different, the pad area is also different.

Yes single pot 4age ae101 calipers will fit.

No idea where to get them in cyprus , but they are very common over here.

I'm aware that I cant get these calipers from Cyprus, and that's one more reason I'm asking for your help guys!

Any info on where can I buy these from NZ, people, stores, I should contact with?

I hoped that they are common and get help from the forum, otherwise I dont know what else to do!

So we can help you... please answer a couple of questions.
Do you have a AE111 4afe corolla?
Are the standard front disks for you car 255x18mm?
Are the new brembo disks 255x22mm?
Are AE111 4age cars sold in Cyprus or in Europe?
Are AE101 4age cars sold in Cyprus or in Europe?

Easiest solution for you is to find an AE111 or AE101 4age powered car that has single pot front brake calipers. You will need the caliper and the torque plate so that they will fit correctly over a 22mm thick disk.
The caliper is upper right and the torque plate is holding the brake pads.

They should bolt on and work perfectly.
Here in New Zealand we have a lot of these cars - from my experience they have 22mm thick front brake disks so it should be the same in Europe.

Twin pot calipers - these come off AE101s and AE111s with superstrut suspension. I don't think they will fit onto your car unless you modify them . I recommend you stick with the standard calipers.
